T'gana urges Centre to supply vaccines to administer booster doses

Telangana Health Minister T Harish Rao on Friday urged the Centre to supply COVID-19 vaccines to step up booster dose coverage in the state. Rao, who attended a video conference held by Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, said Telangana has achieved 48 per cent booster dose coverage against national average of 23 per cent, an official release said. He asked the Centre to inform the states on various issues, including spread of virus, its impact and treatment in view of the rise in Omicron sub-variant BF 7 cases in different countries. This will help the states in improving their preparedness, he said. Rao suggested taking steps in advance to prevent any shortage in oxygen supply. As part of this, oxygen plants should be linked to the nearby hospitals. He also sought steps to ensure that the ventilators and others provided by the Centre to the state remain readily available, the release said. Stray leopard captured in a pharma factory, shifted to zoo in Telangana

A leopard that strayed into a manufacturing facility of a pharma company at Gaddapotharam village in Sangareddy District near here was captured and shifted to Nehru Zoological Park here. The factory workers spotted the leopard and informed the Forest Department officials who immediately swung into action. They verified the CCTV footage and identified that the animal was trapped in a false ceiling roof. A senior Forest Department official said they forced the big cat to come out of its hiding place by using pressured water and after the animal came out, it was sedated by using tranquiliser darts. The official further said the Chief Wildlife Warden would decide where to finally set the leopard free.

Assam's Gamosa, Telangana's Tandur Redgram, Ladakh's apricot get GI tag

The government has granted Geographical Indications (GI) tag to various products, including Gamosa of Assam, Tandur Redgram of Telangana, and an apricot variety of Ladakh. The commerce and Industry ministry said on Wednesday that the total number of GI has reached to 432. "Famous Gamosa of Assam, Tandur Redgram of Telangana, RaktseyKarpo Apricot of Ladakh, Alibag White Onion of Maharashtra have got their GI tags," it said. The top five states holding maximum number of GIs are Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala, it added. Recently, the government has supported the promotion of GIs by approving an expenditure of Rs 75 crore for three years for promotion at awareness programmes. Police break YS Sharmila's indefinite fast, shift her to hospital

Police broke the indefinite fast of YSR Telangana Party (YSRTP) president, Y S Sharmila in protest against alleged denial of permission to continue her statewide 'padayatra' and shifted her to a hospital here in the small hours of Sunday, after her health deteriorated. Sharmila had launched the indefinite hunger strike at the party headquarters here on Friday. Police forced media personnel, party leaders and cadres, to move away from the location and foiled Sharmila's fast before she was "forcefully" shifted to the hospital at around 1.00 AM today, the party said. LG forwards proposal to implement Telangana law in Delhi to MHA: Official

Lt Governor VK Saxena has approved and forwarded a proposal to the Union Home Ministry for issuance of a notification to implement a Telangana law in Delhi which allows the police to take offenders in preventive custody, officials said. In June, the Delhi Police had sought approval for issuance of the notification to extend the Telangana Prevention of Dangerous activities Act, 1986, to the Delhi government citing "a need for stringent legislation for prevention and effective control" of criminal activities, they said. The Act is applicable for prevention of activities of boot-leggers, drug traffickers, land grabbers, those involved in adulteration of food, making fake documents, snatching, robbery, arms running, sale of drugs, gambling, sexual offences, cyber crime among others. Amara Raja Batteries Ltd on Friday said it intends to invest Rs 9,500 crore over the next 10 years in Telangana on setting up research and manufacturing facilities for lithium-ion battery-making in the state. The company on Friday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Telangana government to set up research and manufacturing facilities for lithium-ion battery-making in Mahbubnagar district, Amara Raja Batteries said in a regulatory filing. "Over the next 10 years, the company intends to invest over Rs 9500 crore, after necessary approvals," it added. Telangana eyes 20% increase in foreign, 30% in domestic tourist arrivals

Telangana Tourism expects increase of 20 per cent in foreign tourist arrivals and 30 per cent growth in domestic tourist footfall to the state by end of 2023 as compared to pre-COVID level, a senior government official said. Telangana witnessed domestic tourist arrivals of 3,20,00,620 while international tourists numbered 5,917 in 2021. For this year, domestic arrivals increased to 3,95,53,865 and international arrivals rose to 35,945 up to July. During 2019 when the pandemic had not yet set in, the domestic arrivals in the state was 8,30,35,894 while the number of foreign travellers was 3,23,326. Already, there is increase in the count of foreign travellers visiting Telangana and there has been growth in domestic tourists arriving this year, the official said.
