A lawyer for Twitter owner Elon Musk accused Microsoft of misusing the service's data and demanded an audit from the software giant. The letter primarily addresses a seemingly narrow set of alleged infractions by Microsoft in drawing information from Twitter's database of tweets. But the move could foreshadow more serious developments. Musk has previously accused Microsoft and its partner OpenAI in a tweet of "illegally" using Twitter data to develop sophisticated AI systems such as ChatGPT. "Lawsuit time," Musk wrote in that April tweet. But the letter, signed by Musk lawyer Alex Spiro, tiptoed around that concern. It noted that Microsoft's agreement with Twitter barred it from overuse of the service's data such as exceeding "reasonable request volume" or "excessive or abusive usage." Spiro then noted that "despite these limitations", Microsoft had retrieved more than 26 billion tweets in 2022 alone. He provided no context for those numbers. The process of training AI systems .

A humanitarian aid worker who used an anonymous Twitter account to mock Saudi Arabia about its economy has filed a federal racketeering lawsuit against the social media platform, the kingdom and a number of individuals alleging an attempt to silence critics overseas. Abdulrahman al-Sadhan, was working for the Red Crescent in Riyadh in 2018 when plain-clothed security forces entered the office of the Red Crescent offices in Riyadh. He was taken away without any explanation. How the Saudi government linked al-Sadhan to the Twitter account remains a mystery. In April 2021, the anti-terrorism court where he was tried handed down a prison sentence of 20 years for al-Sadhan, followed by a 20-year travel ban. Al-Sadhan has appealed the ruling. In 2019, Ahmad Abouammo, a U.S. citizen and former media partnership manager for Twitter's Middle East region, was charged with acting as an agent of Saudi Arabia without registering with the U.S. government. The complaint also alleged that Saudi ...

Less than two months into his USD 44 billion purchase of Twitter, Elon Musk declared that whoever took over as the company's CEO must like pain a lot. Then he promised he'd step down as soon as he found a replacement foolish enough to want the job. That person, Musk announced Friday, is Linda Yaccarino, a highly-regarded advertising executive from NBCUniversal. She'll start in six weeks. How long she'll last might depend on her pain tolerance. When Musk tweeted on Thursday that he's found a new CEO but didn't say who, one word stuck out: she. Some of his more extreme Twitter followers took immediate issue with the new CEO's gender, but the fact that Musk hired a woman is actually notable simply because it is so rare in business overall and especially in the tech industry to see female chief executives. Her appointment renewed questions about the glass cliff, a theory that women as well as underrepresented minorities are more likely to be hired for leadership jobs when there's a

Elon Musk confirmed that the new CEO for Twitter will be NBCUniversal's Linda Yaccarino, an executive with deep ties to the advertising industry. I am excited to welcome Linda Yaccarino as the new CEO of Twitter! Musk wrote in a Friday tweet. He added that Yaccarino will focus primarily on business operations" while Musk will stay closely connected to product design and new technology. Before that announcement, NBCUniversal said on Friday that Yaccarino would step down immediately as chairwoman for global advertising and partnerships. Musk, who bought Twitter last fall and has been running it since, has long insisted that he would step down as top executive at the company, which is now called X Corp. Few expect Musk to remove himself from the decision making process at Twitter, however. While he's stepping back from the CEO title, Musk is far from likely to step back from calling the product shots, said Mike Proulx, research director at Forrester Research. Yaccarino, with deep ro
