Congress must boost aid to Israel amid Hamas attack: US army chief

Congress must pass more funding quickly for the US to be able to give both Israel and Ukraine the weapons and munitions they both now need, a top Pentagon official said Monday, as the State Department raised the number of confirmed American deaths in the Hamas attack in Israel to nine. The intent is to lean forward in support of Israel, Army Secretary Christine Wormuth said. "But in particular with munitions and the ability to support Israel and Ukraine simultaneously, additional funding is needed to increase our capacity to expand production and then also pay for the munitions themselves. It is clear the administration is now facing potentially competing requests from Israel and Ukraine for additional weaponry. And while there is strong bipartisan support in Congress for aid to Israel, the next steps are uncertain, with the House lacking a leader after the ouster of the Republican speaker and the Senate out of town until next week. US to send carrier strike group to Eastern Mediterranean to support Israel

The Pentagon has ordered the Ford carrier strike group to sail to the Eastern Mediterranean to be ready to assist Israel, two US officials said on Sunday. The USS Gerald R. Ford and its approximately 5,000 sailors and deck of warplanes will be accompanied by cruisers and destroyers in a show of force that is meant to be ready to respond to anything, from possibly interdicting additional weapons from reaching Hamas and conducting surveillance. Hamas launched its unprecedented incursion out of Gaza on Saturday. At least 600 people have reportedly been killed in Israel and more than 300 have been killed in Gaza as Israeli airstrikes pound the territory. India, US to begin 15-day military exercise in Alaska from Friday

India and the US will kickstart a 15-day mega military exercise in Alaska from Friday to further deepen bilateral military cooperation. The 17th edition of the exercise "Yudh Abhyas" will be conducted at Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson in Alaska from October 15 to 29, the Indian Army said on Thursday. The Indian contingent at the exercise will comprise 350 personnel of an infantry battalion group of the Indian Army. The previous edition of the exercise took place at Mahajan Field Firing Ranges in Bikaner in February. "This exercise is another step in the growing military cooperation between the two countries. The exercise aims at enhancing understanding, cooperation and interoperability between two armies," the Army said. It said the exercise will focus on "combined arms manoeuvres in cold climatic conditions and is primarily aimed at sharing tactical level drills and learning best practices from each other".
