Trump wants Black, Latino votes but lacks popularity among both groups

As he prepares to accept the Republican nomination for the third time, Donald Trump has promised new efforts to expand his coalition - and, in particular, to win over more of the nonwhite voters who largely rejected him during the 2020 election. But an AP analysis of two consecutive polls conducted in June by the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research shows that about 7 in 10 Black Americans have a somewhat or very unfavourable view of Trump, as do about half of Hispanic Americans. While both groups do see Trump a little more favourably than when he left office in 2021, their opinion of him is still more negative than positive. Any gains in support among Black or Hispanic Americans would be helpful for Trump, who won 35% of Hispanic voters and 8% of Black voters in 2020, according to AP VoteCast, and has struggled to grow his appeal beyond his base. He's hoping, in part, to capitalize on frustration with his opponent, since President Joe Biden's favorability among Black and ...

Indian-origin attorney elected alternate delegate to Republican Convention

Indian-American community leader and attorney Hardam Tripathi has been elected as an official alternate delegate for the Republican National Convention in Wisconsin later this month that would formally nominate former US president Donald Trump as the party's presidential candidate. Trump, 78, is the presumptive Republican Party candidate for the presidential election and is pitched against 81-year-old incumbent President Joe Biden from the Democratic Party. The Republican National Party (RNP) convention in Milwaukee from July 14 to 18 would formally nominate Trump as its nominee for the November 5 presidential elections. A lifelong member of the Republican Party, Tripathi, said, This will be my first time serving as a National Delegate at the RNC and it is a distinct honour to represent Florida's 15th Congressional District in a historic election that is forthcoming in these great United States of America. Tripathi is a US Immigration Attorney and Managing Attorney at Trip Law, a .

Republicans seeking to be Trump's VP were once his critics with differences

It's hard to refer to someone as Hitler and end up in their good graces, let alone potentially become the person they choose to help lead the country. But Ohio Sen. JD Vance's shifting position on Donald Trump over the years from onetime critic of the former president to staunch ally is a metamorphosis shared by many of Trump's potential running mates. It's not unheard of for a running mate to move beyond past disagreements with a presidential candidate. Joe Biden had a notably barbed exchange with Kamala Harris in 2020 when both were seeking the Democratic nomination. Biden picked her to be his vice president anyway. But the shift is more striking for Trump's potential running mates, in some cases requiring them to abandon long-held policy positions and recant vehement criticism. Here's a look at some of those shifts: JD Vance In a 2016 interview with Charlie Rose while promoting his book Hillbilly Elegy, Vance called himself a Never Trump guy and said of the soon-to-be-preside

Noise mounts for Biden to step down, he says here to stay and defeat Trump

Following a disastrous performance at the debate stage in Atlanta, there is a growing clamour within the ruling Democratic party and the mainstream American media for President Joe Biden to step down from the presidential race. However, the 81-year-old president and his campaign have asserted that he is not giving up and is determined to successfully run for the November 5th presidential elections. A private call of Democrats fuels insider rage about Biden's debate debacle

A sense of concern is growing inside the top ranks of the Democratic Party that leaders of Joe Biden's campaign and the Democratic National Committee are not taking seriously enough the impact of the president's troubling debate performance earlier in the week. DNC Chairman Jaime Harrison held a Saturday afternoon call with dozens of committee members across the country, a group of some of the most influential members of the party. He did not acknowledge Biden's weak showing Thursday night or the avalanche of criticism that followed. Multiple committee members on the call, granted anonymity to talk about the private discussion, described feeling like they were being gaslighted that they were being asked to ignore the dire nature of the party's predicament. The call, they said, may have worsened a widespread sense of panic among elected officials, donors and other stakeholders. Instead, the people said, Harrison offered what they described as a rosy assessment of Biden's path forwar

After Joe Biden's debate debacle, Jill reassures that they are still all in

Jill Biden was right at her husband's side Saturday as they exited Air Force One to head for a pair of campaign stops at luxurious vacation homes on Long Island. And she got straight to the point when it was her turn to introduce the president at a tony fundraiser. Joe isn't just the right person for the job. He's the only person for the job, she declared. The first lady also told donors, Anyone can tell you what they want to do, but Joe Biden can tell you what he's done with his judgment, his experience, and his relationships with leaders across the globe. The first lady is trying to rally support for her husband after a dreadful performance in Thursday's presidential debate created fresh worries about President Joe Biden's age and his ability to compete in November's election and to serve another four years. The community college professor has been by her husband's side since he exited the debate stage as he faces what could be a defining challenge of his presidency the presiden

For many voters, Biden-Trump debate means a tough choice just got tougher

The sound you might have heard after the presidential debate this past week was of voters falling between a rock and a hard place. Apart from the sizable and pumped-up universe of Donald Trump's supporters, the debate suddenly crystalized the worries of many Americans, a portion of President Joe Biden's supporters among them, that neither man is fit to lead the nation. Heading into the first debate of the general election campaign, voters had faced a choice between two strikingly unpopular candidates. They then watched as Trump told a stream of falsehoods with sharpness, vigor and conviction, while Biden struggled mightily to land debating points and even to get through many sentences. It added to doubts about the 81-year-old Democratic president's fitness to be in office for four more years. Now, the options are even more dispiriting for many Democrats, undecided voters and anti-Trump Republicans. More than a few people came away from watching the debate very conflicted. Outside a

Biden should withdraw from race to save American democracy, says US media

A day after Joe Biden's dismal showing at the first presidential debate against Donald Trump, leading US media outlets have commented that the incumbent US President should leave the race for the White House for the future of American democracy and prevent a second innings for his Republican rival. Biden, seeking a second term in the White House, stumbled and fumbled during the televised presidential debate with his predecessor Trump on Thursday night in Atlanta, setting off alarm bells among top Democrats about whether the 81-year-old president can stay atop the gruelling months ahead of the elections on November 5. The 78-year-old Trump, who is the presumptive Republican Party candidate for the presidential election, clashed right from the start with Biden and by the end of the 90 minutes debate, gave enough fodder for serious editorials and opinions as well as memes on social media. The New York Times Editorial Board on Friday went on to say how President Biden has repeatedly and

Would be an honour to be running mate of Donald Trump: Vivek Ramaswamy

Indian-American millionaire entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, who was once a rival of former president Donald Trump, has said though he has not been asked, he would be "honoured" to serve in the Trump administration as his running mate. Ramaswamy, however, made it clear that he has not been approached by the Trump Campaign. Ramaswamy, 38, dropped out of the 2024 Republican Party presidential race in January after a disappointing showing in the Iowa caucuses and endorsed Trump. Previously, some US media reported that Ramaswamy could be among the frontrunners. Virtually unknown before he announced his run for president, Ramaswamy rose to third place in national polls over the summer, amid a slew of appearances on cable news. While talking to reporters on Thursday on the sidelines of the Biden-Trump Presidential debate in Atlanta, the biotech entrepreneur said, "I think one of the things about Donald Trump, I have seen in him and that doesn't really come across on television is that he i

Debate upshots: Trump punches, even when wrong, Biden bows, even with facts

Thursday's presidential debate was a re-run that featured two candidates with a combined age of 159, but it went especially poorly for one of them, President Joe Biden. Already fighting voter concerns about his age, Biden, 81, was halting and seemed to lose his train of thought, sparking quick concerns among Democrats about the man they hope will keep former President Donald Trump from returning to office. For his part, Trump made repeated false claims and provocative statements. But Trump seemed smoother and more vigorous than Biden, who is only three years older than the Republican ex-president. The debate covered a wide range of topics and included a former president Trump not backing down from his vows to prosecute members of Congress and even the man he was debating. But the overarching theme was the difference between the candidates' performance. Here are some takeaways from the face-off. Style v. Substance Presidential debates are often scored on style and impression mor
