The trial of eight militants who perpetrated Bangladesh's worst terror attack on a popular cafe here in 2016 that killed 22 people, including a 19-year-old Indian girl, began in a court on Monday. Indian national Tarishi Jain was among 17 foreigners who were brutally murdered by the militants inside the restaurant in Dhaka's high-security diplomatic zone on the night of July 1, 2016, before commandos launched an assault killing six attackers and capturing one alive. Apart from Jain, nine Italians, seven Japanese, and five Bangladeshis, including two police officers, were also killed while 50 people were injured in the attack. Most of the victims were found with their throats slit. Investigators said a total of 21 militants were involved in planning the assault but 13 of them were killed in subsequent anti-terrorism operations by security forces. "The judge indicted the suspects to be tried and set December 3 for beginning the arguments," an official of Anti-Terrorism Special Tribunal .

Meghalaya Governor Tathagata Roy posted a controversial tweet Monday that the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack was "a slaughter of innocents (except Muslims)", later apologising and deleting it, saying it contained a "factual mistake". He tweeted it on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Mumbai terror attack, in which 166 people were killed and over 300 injured. "10th anniversary today of the Paki-sponsored slaughter of innocents (except Muslims) at Mumbai, popularly called 26/11. Does anyone remember why we did not even downgrade our diplomatic relations with the Pakis (let alone break off such relations or go to war?)," Roy's tweet said. The governor, however, was quick to delete it and apologise. "I was misinformed of the Paki-sponsored killers of 26/11 having spared Muslims. In fact several Muslims were killed. Mohammed Farooq Shaikh was nabbed by the Crime Branch from Ahmedabad airport, soon after his arrival from Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, Assistant Commissioner of Police Bhagrithsinh Gohil told PTI. Two armed terrorists had attacked the temple in Gandhinagar, killing 30 people and injuring eight on September 24, 2002. The attack followed the Godhra riots in the same year. "Shaikh lived in Juhapura before he fled to Riyadh in 2002 after the temple attack," the police official said, adding Shaikh had arranged funds for the attack.

Tears streamed down the faces of residents of Chak Ashmuji village Monday as they bid farewell to braveheart Lance Naik Nazir Ahmed Wani, who laid down his life during an encounter in South Kashmir's Shopian district in which six militants were killed. Wrapped in tricolour, the body of the decorated soldier was taken to his native village Ashmuji in Kulgmam and handed over to family members. Wani was a militant initially and became a counter-insurgent after he realised the futility of violence, a senior Army officer accompanying the coffin said. "The family was fighting tears and they were honoured by the supreme sacrifice of Lance Naik Wani for the nation and peace for his state," the officer said. After the rituals, the body was taken for burial to a nearby graveyard where 500 to 600 villagers were present. A 21-gun salute was given when Wani's body was lowered in the grave. The accused, Wasim, was arrested for making the hoax call on November 24 at the "Dial-100", claiming that a terrorist attack was going to take place in Ayodhya on November 25, the day on which Vishva Hindu Parishad's (VHP) Dharam Sabha was organised," Superintendent of Police V P Srivastava said. Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has condemned the recent suicide bombing in the country's Khost province, calling it a "shocking incident".On November 23, as many as 27 people were killed in a suicide bombing inside a mosque in Khost, when the gathering including a couple of Afghan National Army soldiers, were offering their prayers.In a statement, Ghani ordered authorities to thoroughly investigate the suicide attack and punish the perpetrators. Seven persons, including a former councillor, were arrested on Monday in Sri Lanka for planning to publicly commemorate slain LTTE supremo Velupillai Prabhakaran's 64th birth anniversary, police said. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), which led the separatist war for a separate Tamil homeland for three decades in the island nation, was finally crushed by the Lankan military in 2009 with the death of Prabhakaran. The seven persons, including a former northern provincial councillor VK Shivajilingam, were arrested at Prabhakaran's birth place at Velvettiturai, police said, adding that they seized a cake and banners from them. The persons were later released. During the LTTE's 30-year separatist campaign, Prabhakaran's birthday was celebrated as the Hero's Day or Martyr's Day.
