Japan is hosting a multinational security exercise off Tokyo's southern coast aimed at intercepting shipments of missiles and other weapons of mass destruction at sea. Japanese navy sailors and their counterparts from the US and Australia and the South Korean coast guard joined today's exercise. Participants took turns stopping and raiding a target boat found at sea. Journalists observed from the Japanese destroyer Murasame. Thirty countries, including six core members of the Proliferation Security Initiative, participated, along with 20 observers and four non-members. The initiative started in 2003 as part of Washington's effort to block shipments of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons, as well as missiles to carry them. The initiative does not target any specific country, but North Korea has criticised it in the past.

Two Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) terrorists were today killed in an encounter with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag district, police said. Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Lal Chowk area of the district this morning following information about the presence of terrorists there, a police official said. He said the operation turned into an encounter after terrorists started firing at security forces. Two militants, belonging to the LeT, were killed in the cross- fire, the official said. He said the individual identities of the slain militants was being ascertained. Police today released a CCTV grab of two bike-borne suspects who they believe carried out the attack at Batamaloo in which a CRPF jawan was killed and two others injured. "Identify the suspects involved in today's terror attack at Batamaloo," the Kashmir Zone Police said as it released the photograph on Twitter.
