Security official Ahmed al-Gabiely says the attack took place early today in the eastern town of el-Agheila when the armed men "slit a police officer's throat" and killed another in a shootout with security forces manning the checkpoint. He says the group later attacked a police station, raised the militant Islamic black flag atop the building and burned several police and ambulance vehicles. At least four people were reported missing after the attack. Al-Gabiely says the group has carried out similar attacks over the past months. Libya sank into lawlessness following a 2011 uprising that toppled and later killed a longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi.

Seoul considers reducing troops along N Korea border zone

South Korea is considering withdrawing some troops from its border zone with North Korea as a confidence-building measure after their landmark summit, the defence ministry said today. The ministry said it would withdraw some soldiers and equipment at guard posts inside the Demilitarised Zone on a trial basis, and consider a gradual expansion of the pullout later. "We will push for plans for a full-scale withdrawal in sync with surveys of historical remains and ecological features," it said in a report to parliament. The 1950-53 Korean War ended with an armistice rather than a peace treaty, leaving the two Koreas technically at war. The DMZ was designated as a buffer zone but the areas to the north and south of it are heavily fortified. At their April summit, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and the South's president Moon Jae-in agreed to cease all hostile acts and turn their border into a "peace zone". Also under consideration is a joint programme with the North and the United States ..

More than 600 people-smugglers have been arrested across six countries since Australia introduced its hardline border regime, a senior official said today, with over 30 asylum-seeker boats turned back. Immigration Minister Peter Dutton, in releasing details of the conservative government's classified "Operation Sovereign Borders", said the controversial policy had saved lives. "I've not had a death at sea on my watch," he said. The military operation began in September 2013 and has managed to halt the flood of boat arrivals that characterised previous Labor administrations. Before the conservatives took power and adopted a zero tolerance stance, an estimated 50,000 asylum-seekers flooded into Australia on more than 800 boats over the previous five years. Hundreds more, many from war-torn Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and the Middle East, died at sea during the treacherous journey.
