The nine jawans, who had gone missing during their journey from West Bengal to Jammu and Kashmir, were visiting their homes in nearby areas on the route, BSF Director General K K Sharma said today. He said the episode was a case of miscommunication. The jawans were found missing without official permission between Bardhaman and Dhanbad railway stations during a headcount on Wednesday. US opens new military HQ in South Korea

US forces in South Korea opened their new headquarters today, on what they called Washington's biggest overseas base, just weeks after President Donald Trump said he wanted to bring the troops home. The US and South Korea are treaty allies and for decades US Forces Korea (USFK) have been headquartered in Yongsan, in the centre of Seoul and prime real estate. The two allies agreed as long ago as 1990 to relocate the headquarters to Camp Humphreys, an existing base in Pyeongtaek, around 60 kilometres (38 miles) south of the capital. But the project was delayed for years by resident protests, financial issues and extensive construction work. It was not until 2013 that the first unit transferred across to Camp Humphreys, named after a pilot who died in a helicopter accident. The USFK headquarters moved today, as did the US-led United Nations Command, under whose flag the allies fought in the Korean War, with more units to follow suit later. The US has 28,500 troops stationed in the South .

Iraq executes 13 death row jihadists to avenge killings

Iraq said today executed 13 death row jihadists after Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi vowed a forceful retaliation to calm public anger over the Islamic State group's murder of abducted civilians. While Iraqis have grown accustomed to the atrocities committed by IS, the killing of the eight civilians shocked the nation and doused hopes the jihadists had been defeated. For the first time, the authorities released photographs of the hangings, which came after Abadi yesterday ordered the "immediate" executions of hundreds of convicted jihadists. The justice ministry said today that the 13 convicts put to death at a prison in southern Iraq "had participated in armed operations with terrorist groups, in kidnappings, bombings and murders of civilians". Abadi's office had earlier announced the execution of 12 convicts whose appeals were exhausted. More than 300 people, including around 100 foreign women, have been condemned to death in Iraq and hundreds of others to life imprisonment for ...

EU leaders vow tougher action on chemical weapons, spying

EU leaders today pledged to crack down harder on chemical weapons and step up efforts to combat spying, as Europe frets about threats from Russia. Three months after a nerve agent attack in the British city of Salisbury, blamed on Russia, united the EU in condemnation of Moscow, the bloc's leaders said they wanted new measures to stop the spread of chemical weapons. A summit of EU leaders in Brussels called for "the adoption as soon as possible of a new EU regime of restrictive measures to address the use and proliferation of chemical weapons". The call came a day after the international community voted to beef up the powers of the world chemical weapons watchdog, allowing it to name those responsible for toxic arms attacks in Syria. The Salisbury attack, along with repeated gas attacks in Syria's bloody civil war and the assassination of North Korea leader Kim Jong-Un's half brother using VX nerve agent in Malaysia, have led to fears that the century-old taboo against chemical ...
