3 IS militants killed in J&K gunfight: Police (Third Lead)

The three militants killed in a gunfight with the security forces in Anantnag district belonged to the Islamic State terror group, Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP) S.P. Vaid said on Friday. This is the first official confirmation of any IS militant being killed in Kashmir.

Mobile Internet services snapped in three Kashmir districts

Mobile Internet services were today snapped in three districts of Kashmir Valley, including the summer capital, as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order. The services have been barred in Srinagar, Anantnag and Pulwama districts of the valley, a police official said. He said the decision to suspend the services has been taken as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order. An encounter is going on in Anantnag district in south Kashmir in which two militants, reportedly affiliated to Islamic State Jammu and Kashmir, have been killed. One of the militants is believed to be from Srinagar.

Civilians, policeman injured in Anantnag encounter

Several civilians and a policeman were injured as an encounter broke out between militants and security forces in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir this morning, police said. Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Srigufwara area of the district in south Kashmir after receiving specific intelligence input about the presence of militants in the area, a police official said. He said the search operation turned into a gunfight after militants fired upon the forces, who retaliated. The gunfight was going on when last reports came in, the official said. He said clashes broke out near the encounter site as a group of youth started pelting stones on the forces who are engaged in the operation. Security forces used force on protestors and several civilians and a policeman have suffered injuries, the official said. Further details were awaited.

Indonesian cleric sentenced to death over 2016 terror attack

Indonesian cleric Aman Abdurrahman was sentenced to death today over his role in a 2016 Islamic State terror attack that saw a suicide bomber blow himself up at a Jakarta Starbucks cafe. Heavily armed police guarded the hearing at a Jakarta court -- which had earlier found Abdurrahman guilty of masterminding the attack that killed four -- as it ordered his execution. "(The defendant) has been proven to have committed a criminal act of terrorism," said judge Akhmad Jaini, who also cited Abdurrahman's involvement in other attacks for handing down the death penalty. "He will be sentenced to death." 9 injured in clash in UP

At least nine people, including a woman, were injured in a clash between two groups over music played by the DJ at a wedding in the district, police said today. According to circle officer, the incident took place last night at Chandedi village under Budhana police station. The police said that a team was rushed to the spot after receiving information about the clash and 12 people were taken into custody. The injured were admitted to a hospital, police said, adding that security has been tightened as a precautionary measure.

US willing to facilitate talks between Kabul and Taliban

Radical Indonesian cleric faces death penalty ruling for 2016 attack

An Indonesian court is set to decide tomorrow whether to sentence a radical cleric to death for his role in a 2016 terror attack that was the first claimed by the Islamic State group in Southeast Asia. Aman Abdurrahman is suspected of masterminding the gun and suicide attack in downtown Jakarta which left four attackers and four civilians dead. The assault in the capital saw dramatic scenes as a suicide bomber blew himself up in a Starbucks while security forces battled gun-toting militants. Last month, prosecutors demanded that Abdurrahman be executed for the attack. Police nabs two in Budgam shooting case

The police today claimed to have cracked a shootout case in Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir in which a policeman was killed in May this year, by arresting two suspects. Constable Shamim Ahmad was killed on May 11 when militants attacked a Minority Guard at Wadwan in the central Kashmir district in a failed bid to snatch weapons, a police spokesman said. He said during the course of the investigation, security forces apprehended two prime suspects identified as Dawood Ahmad Ganie, a resident of Kashka Mohalla Soibugh, and Touseef Ahmad Kumbay, a resident of Warsangam Soibugh. Two hand grenades were recovered from their possession, the spokesman said. Further investigation in the case is underway, the spokesman said.

UP youths in Valley made to pelt stones: Police

Some Uttar Pradesh men who had found jobs in Pulwama in Jammu and Kashmir have claimed they were made to pelt stones at security forces there. Director General of Police, O P Singh today said six youths from Baghpat and Saharanpur districts have complained that they were told to take part in stone pelting. Fed up with this, they returned home, the officer added. The youths had gone to Pulwama to work as tailors at a monthly salary of Rs 20,000. "We will deal with this issue very discreetly, the DGP said. The state's anti-terror squad will probe the matter. Baghpat's Superintendent of Police Jai Prakash also mentioned one such case. He said a man, identified as Nasim, told police that he and some others were kept at a factory in Pulwama. On one occasion, the labourers there took part in stone pelting. He was also asked to throw stones but he refused and escaped from the place, the SP added.

Dutch arrest two terror suspects

Dutch police have arrested two men in Europe's biggest port city on suspicion of preparing a terror attack, prosecutors said today. The two, aged 22 and 27, were detained on Sunday evening in Rotterdam, following a tip-off from the country's intelligence services. "They are suspected of preparing a terrorist crime and being part of a terrorist organisation," the prosecution service said in a statement. During searches of the suspects' home "telephones, USB sticks and other data carriers were seized," it added. The two were today remanded for two weeks in custody with restricted access, meaning they can only have contact with their lawyer. The latest arrests came after Dutch police arrested three men on Monday in different cities, including northern Groningen and Zaanstad near Amsterdam. Their DNA had been found on weapons seized in a Paris suburb when law officers foiled a planned 2016 terror attack. Pak confirms killing of TTP chief Mullah Fazlullah in Afghanistan

Pakistan today confirmed that Mullah Fazlullah, the dreaded chief of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), has been killed in Afghanistan's restive Kunar province, calling it a "significant" development. "Yes, we confirm it....," Foreign Office spokesperson Mohammad Faisal told reporters here at his weekly media briefing. This was the first official confirmation of Fazlullah's death by Pakistan. A spokesman for US forces in Afghanistan, Lt. Col. Martin O'Donnell, last week said that the US forces had conducted a strike close to the border of Pakistan, targeting the "Emir" of the group. No state govt function to celebrate Yoga Day

The Lal Thanhawla led Congress government in Mizoram did not organise any official function to observe the International Yoga Day today, officials said. An official statement narrated about the valedictory function of the Healthy Mizoram Campaign but did not mention yoga. Reports said that the Yoga day functions was observed in the headquarters of the central para-military forces here. The powerful church, the civil societies and the student bodies of the state had earlier objected to the observance of the International Yoga Day expressing suspicion that Yoga is a part of 'Hindu ritual' and should not be practised by Christians. 60 live crude bombs recovered by police during night-long

About 60 live crude bombs were recovered from a bamboo grove in Baishnabnagar area in West Bengal's Maldah district durig a night-long search since Wednesday, police said today. The police raided the bamboo grove adjacent to Malatipur village last night following a tip off and seized the large number of bombs from five bags, a jar and a motorcycle dicky during the night-long operation, which ended this morning. The police also seized materials used for making bombs. Additional superintendent of police Dipak Sarkar rushed to the spot with reinforcement and the bombs were later defused. The police suspect that the bombs were stockpiled by antisocials. Investigations are on, they said.
