UN scrambles to avert 'fierce bloody battle' for Yemen port

The United Nations mobilised today to avert a "fierce, bloody battle" for a key port in Yemen that provides a lifeline for food, medicine and other vital supplies. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres met with Yemen's foreign minister at UN headquarters in New York amid warnings that an attack on rebel-held Hodeida was imminent. Guterres said his envoy Martin Griffiths was locked in "intense negotiations" with Yemen's rebel Huthis, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to find a "way to avoid the military confrontation in Hodeida." During his meeting with Yemen's new Foreign Minister Khaled Alyemany, Guterres stressed that "everyone should redouble efforts to find a political solution and avoid a fierce, bloody battle for Hodeida," UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said. 2 attacks in Central African Republic kill 1 peacekeeper

The UN peacekeeping mission in the Central African Republic said today that a Burundian peacekeeper was killed and several government soldiers were wounded in separate attacks over the weekend. The mission said today that armed elements attacked a UN patrol in Bambari on Sunday, killing one peacekeeper and wounding another. The UN mission also said members of the armed group Unity and Peace in the Central African Republic attacked a troop convoy heading from Ouaka prefecture to Bangassou in the southeast on Sunday. Defence Minister Marie Noelle Koyara said two soldiers and a Russian instructor were wounded. She said five attackers were killed. The defence minister called for armed groups to honour an accord meant to facilitate the deployment of security forces to protect civilians. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres strongly condemned the attack in Bambari, saying the latest death brought to five the number of peacekeepers killed in targeted attacks in the Central African Republic .

2 policemen killed in terror attack in J-K's Pulwama

Two police personnel were killed and three others were injured in a terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district on Tuesday.The police revealed that an exchange of fire took place after terrorists attacked a police guard post, at a court complex, in the wee hours of Tuesday morning.The area has been cordoned off and a search operation is underway.In a separate incident, terrorists attacked a Central Reserve Police Force party with grenades at Janglat Mandi in Anantnag. Four CRPF men were reportedly injured in the attack.All the injured were rushed to the hospital.More details are awaited.

J-K: Two cops killed in gunfight with militants

Two policemen guarding the court complex in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district were killed today in a militant attack. The militants opened fire at the police picket guarding the district court complex in Pulwama town in the early hours, a police spokesman said. He said the cops retaliated the firing. In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, two cops were killed. Following the incident, the area has been cordoned off and further details are awaited.

Five jawans hurt as militants attack CRPF party in J-K

Five CRPF jawans were injured in a grenade attack by militants in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir early today. "Militants hurled a grenade on CRPF party at Janglat Mandi in Anantnag. Five CRPF personnel got minor injuries," a police spokesman said. He said all the injured were shifted to hospital for treatment where their condition is stated to be stable.

New UN envoy to pay first visit to Myanmar

The new UN envoy for Myanmar, Christine Schraner Burgener, will pay her first visit to the country beginning tomorrow, holding talks on human rights and the Rohingya refugee crisis, the UN said. The former Swiss ambassador to Germany who was appointed in April will meet with Myanmar authorities, "ethnic armed organizations", civil society and religious leaders, a UN statement said today. Following her visit to Myanmar, Schraner Burgener will travel to Bangladesh where 700,000 Muslim Rohingya are sheltering in camps after being driven from their homes by an army campaign. Myanmar has said the military operation launched in August in northern Rakhine state is aimed at rooting out extremists. After fleeing persecution, the Rohingya living in camps are now at risk from landslides triggered by the monsoon rains. C Africa asks UN to approve China arms deliveries

The Central African Republic has asked the UN Security Council to approve deliveries of Chinese-made armoured vehicles, machine guns, tear gas grenades and other weaponry for its struggling army and police, according to the request obtained by AFP today. Defence Minister Marie Noelle Koyara requested an exemption to an arms embargo, arguing that national forces are "confronted with the strength and escalating violence of armed groups whose illegal activities pose a threat to civil order." The council imposed an arms embargo on the Central African Republic in 2013 when the country descended into bloodshed but its sanctions committee last year gave the green light for Russia to supply weapons to the national forces. Council members have until Thursday 3:00 pm (1900 GMT) to raise objections to the request for the Chinese shipments, according to a letter from the sanction committee's vice-chair. China is donating the military equipment which includes 12 armoured vehicles and four assault .

Swede charged with complicity in 2015 Paris attacks

French anti-terror judges charged a Swedish man today with complicity in the 2015 Paris attacks that left 130 people dead, over allegations he played a key role in the jihadist cell behind the carnage. Osama Krayem, a 25-year-old of Syrian origin, has been in custody in Belgium since his arrest in Brussels in April 2016 and was charged after being transferred to France for the day. He was also charged with attempted murder and sequestration. Investigators also accuse Krayem of being part of the cell that carried out the 2016 Brussels bombings which left 32 people dead and like the Paris attacks were claimed by the Islamic State group. Krayem is suspected of buying the bags used for the Brussels attacks and was caught on CCTV minutes before one of the blasts with suicide bomber Khalid El Bakraoui, both carrying huge backpacks. Drug peddlers held; 70 kg poppy straw recovered: police

Four alleged drug peddlers were arrested today in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir and over 70 kilograms of poppy straw was recovered from them, police claimed. Acting on specific information, police apprehended four drug peddlers and recovered 70.6 kilograms of poppy straw from their possession at Lasipora area of the south Kashmir district, a police official said. He said a case under NDPS Act was registered and investigation taken up.

Zimbabwe cricket director Ikope provisionally suspended by ICC

Zimbabwe cricket director Enock Ikope has been provisionally suspended with immediate effect by the International Cricket Council (ICC) after being charged with breaching the ICC Anti-Corruption Code on three counts. Ikope, chairman of the Harare Metropolitan Cricket Association (HMCA) and director of Zimbabwe Cricket, has 14 days from today to respond to the charges, the ICC said. He has been charged with breaching: Article 2.4.6 (failure or refusal, without compelling justification, to cooperate with an investigation being carried out by the ACU), Article 2.4.7 (delaying an investigation being carried out by the ACU) and Article 2.4.7 (obstruction of an investigation being carried out by the ACU). 13 dead, 31 wounded in Kabul attack

A suicide attacker blew himself up today as government workers queued for an early bus home during the holy month of Ramadan, killing at least 13 people and wounding 31, officials and hospital staff said. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the latest attack in the Afghan capital, a day before the government's separate ceasefire with the Taliban is due to start. The blast happened at the main gate of the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development, police and health ministry spokesmen told AFP. Curfew extended in Shillong for a few more days: Top official

The Meghalaya government today decided to extend night curfew in the violence-hit Meghalaya capital by "a few more days" and promised to review its decision to suspend Internet services after 24 hours, a top district official said here today. Curfew would be enforced from 6 pm today to 7 am tomorrow in the 14 "vulnerable" areas and 9 pm to 5 am in other parts of Shillong, he said. "The government does not want to take chances. The home department today reviewed the situation in the state capital and decided to extend night curfew for a few more days," East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner P S Dkhar said. The internet facilities would also remain suspended for at least another 24 hours, he said. A home department official said security forces would continue to keep vigil on the city until the situation returns to normal. At present, 15 companies of central armed police forces, six companies of state's special riot police and two battalions of the state police are deployed .

The government will examine the feasibility of blocking WhatsApp calling services in insurgency-hit areas such as Jammu and Kashmir as it has come to light that militants are using the facility to be in constant touch with their handlers sitting across the border, officials have said. The issue was flagged during a meeting held here today under the chairmanship of Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba where the recent arrests in connection the terror attack at Nagrota Army camp in 2016 was highlighted. Viagara tablets worth Rs 50 lakh seized in TN, one held

Viagara tablets worth around Rs 50 lakh, allegedly meant to be smuggled to Sri Lanka, were seized today from a country boat near here and one person arrested in this connection, police said. Acting on a tip off, police went to the spot in Keezhakarai, about 50 km from here, and found a country boat laden with the drugs. Kabul suicide blasts: Death toll rises to 13
