A third Palestinian was killed by Israeli fire today, the health ministry in Ramallah said, after a man was shot dead in clashes northeast of Jerusalem. The Palestinian ministry said Bassel Ibrahim, 24, was shot dead by Israeli forces in Anata, a town between the West Bank and Jerusalem, in protests against Washington's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital. Earlier, two Palestinians died in clashes along the Gaza border, with seven killed in total since Trump's shock announcement last week.
Odisha Police today registered cases against two persons on the charge of posting inside pictures of Sri Jagannath Temple in Puri in the social media. Akash Madake of Pune in Maharashtra and Jugal Kishore Vaishnav of Raipur in Chhattisgarh were booked under different sections of Sri Jagannath Temple Act, 1955 and Information Technology (IT) Act of 2000, police said. Singhdwar Police Station registered the cases on the basis of an FIR lodged by Sri Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA). The duo had separately taken the photographs inside the 12th Century Temple with the help of their mobile camera during a visit to the temple with family members a few months ago. The SJTA had already banned still cameras, video recording devices and mobile phones inside the temple in view of the security. The Belgian trial of Paris attacks suspect Salah Abdeslam, which was scheduled to begin on Monday in Brussels, has been delayed, the court said today. Abdeslam, the sole surviving suspect of the November 2015 Paris attacks, was due to go on trial over a shooting in the Belgian capital that led to his capture. But the court said it agreed to set a new date at Monday's hearing following an application by Abdeslam's lawyer Sven Mary. Abdeslam and Sofian Ayari, also implicated in the shootout, were set to stand trial on charges of "attempting to murder several police officers in a terrorist context" and "carrying prohibited weapons in a terrorist context". Both Abdeslam and Ayari were captured days after the March 15, 2016 shootout, ending a four-month manhunt for Abdeslam for his alleged role in the Paris attacks that left 130 people dead and hundreds wounded. Abdeslam, 28, is linked to the same cell that carried out suicide bombings in Brussels a week after the gun battle.
Police today seized a huge cache of arms, which included 25 rifles, from a vehicle on the Mumbai- Agra national highway near Nashik and arrested three persons, in one of the biggest seizure of this kind in Maharashtra. The firearms were allegedly stolen from a gun shop in Banda district of Uttar Pradesh, Sanjay Darade, Superintendent of Police, Nashik (rural), told PTI. The police have formed at least eight teams to investigate the sensitive matter and to know why the three men were heading towards Mumbai. "We are trying to find out their intention," Darade said. The three men have been identified as Salman Amanulla Khan (19), Badari Juman Badshah (27), residents of Sewri in Mumbai, and Nagesh Bansode (23), a resident of Nashik. Describing the events leading to the arrests, Darade said the police intercepted the vehicle early today at Chandwad toll booth and seized 25 rifles, 19 revolvers and more than 4,000 live cartridges after the owner of a nearby petrol pump alerted .
Saudi-led air strikes have killed 28 Huthi rebels south of the port of Hodeida on Yemen's west coast, medics and security sources close to the insurgents said today. The reports came as the UN refugee agency UNHCR warned of a new displacement of civilians in the area. The security sources said the air strikes yesterday and today hit five towns controlled by the Huthis around 70 kilometres (45 miles) south of Hodeida. Medical sources said 28 Huthis were killed and 17 others wounded in the strikes. There has been no let-up in the air campaign against the rebels that a Saudi-led coalition has been waging since March 2015. The air strikes have intensified since the December 4 killing of ex-president Ali Abdullah Saleh at the hands of the Huthis after his alliance with the rebels collapsed. A woman rebel, believed to be a close aide of senior Naxal leader Paparao, was killed in an encounter with security forces in Chhattisgarh's insurgency-hit Bijapur district today, police said. Kosi Sodhi, the woman, was a member of Pamed area committee of Naxals, they said. Sodhi was killed in a gun-battle with the Special Task Force of police in a forest under the Pamed police station limits, Special Director General of Police (anti-Naxal operations) D M Awasthi told PTI. The area is around 500 km away from Raipur. Security forces had been sent to the area after receiving information about Naxals' movement there, Awasthi said. The encounter took place in Jarampalli forests. Sodhi's colleagues escaped into the core area of the forest when the security personnels closed in, he said. One naxal was killed and three District Reserve Guard (DRG) jawans were injured in an encounter between security forces and Maoist rebels in Chhattisgarhs insurgency-hit Sukma district today, police said. The incident took place in Gogunda-Mudopara forest under Phulbagdi police station when a team of the DRG was out on an anti-Maoist operation, Special Director General of Police (anti-naxal operations) DM Awasthi told PTI. He said that the rebels triggered an improvised explosive device (IED) when the DRG patrolling team reached the forest of Gogunda-Mudopara, around 500 kms away from here. The explosion left three jawans wounded and a gun-battle broke out between the two sides subsequently, he said. "After the firing stopped, security forces recovered the body of one ultra along with a 12 bore gun, Claymore mine and other explosives from the spot," Awasthi said. Sixteen fishermen from this coastal town, arrested by Sri Lankan Navy in October, were released by the island nation today. A court in Jaffna ordered their release from prison, according to information received by Rameswaram Fishermen's Association leader P Sesuraja. He said that Sri Lankan naval personnel would hand over the fishermen to the Indian Coast Guard at the International Maritime Boundary Line tomorrow. More than 130 Tamil Nadu fishermen, arrested on various occasions, are still languishing in different prisons in Sri Lanka, he said.
The BSF has killed a suspected Naxal and recovered ammunition after an encounter in the jungles of Malkangiri district that fall along the Andhra- Odisha cut-off area, the paramilitary today said. The encounter took place at about 7:00 am in the forests on Lukapani on the Badapada-Janbai axis of the district, when a Border Security Force patrol detected movement of Maoists in the area. "Body of an unidentified male Naxalite along with one SLR (self loading rifle), two bullet-holding magazines and 54 live rounds was found after a brief exchange of fire. "On further search of the area a powerful IED (improvised explosive device) was recovered hidden under the boulders," a BSF spokesperson said.
