Fresh snow in Kashmir's higher reaches, Met forecasts wet weather in valley

Some places in the higher reaches of Kashmir received fresh snowfall on Saturday, with the Met office forecasting a spell of wet weather in the Valley amid an increase in the minimum temperature, officials said. The tourist resort town of Sonamarg in central Kashmir's Ganderbal district and the upper areas of Gulmarg received light snow, the officials said. They said there were reports of light snowfall at some other areas in the higher reaches, including Zojila, and Sadhna Top in Kupwara. Some places in the Valley also received light rain. Owing to the cloud cover, the minimum temperature at most places in Kashmir, including Srinagar -- which had experienced the coldest night of the season on Friday -- settled above freezing point, the officials said. IMD launches dedicated weather forecast for Sabarimala pilgrimage

In a first for the Sabarimala pilgrimage, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has introduced a localised weather forecasting system, similar to those for the Amarnath and Char Dham yatras. IMD officials announced on Thursday that its regional centre has installed three rain gauges at Sannidhanam, Pamba, and Nilakkal to issue three-day weather forecasts. These forecasts will soon be upgraded to real-time weather bulletins, known as "nowcasts," said IMD regional director Neetha K Gopal. Recognising the challenges posed by rising temperatures and high humidity during dry spells, the IMD also plans to install temperature gauges in the area. The initiative follows a request from the Pathanamthitta district administration, which sought real-time weather updates for Sabarimala due to the region's susceptibility to extreme rainfall. Delhi among 3 cities to get urban radar network for better weather forecast

"We plan to extend similar coverage in the other three metros Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata within the next one year," M Ravichandran, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences, said. Under Mission Mausam, the government plans to install 50 doppler weather radars across the country to strengthen weather forecasting services. The urban radar network will provide real-time data every five minutes by detecting clouds which bring extreme rainfall as well as thunderstorms.
