Kargil shivers at -19 deg C; avalanche warning for 7 districts

Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh reeled under arctic conditions today, with Kargil being the coldest place in northern India at -19 degrees Celsius, even as dense fog in Delhi affected rail services. Authorities in Srinagar today issued an avalanche warning for seven districts of Kashmir till tomorrow evening in view of forecast of rain or snow. "According to the additional commissioner, Kashmir, avalanche warning exists for avalanche prone areas in Anantnag, Kulgam, Budgam, Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipora and Ganderbal districts of Kashmir division," an official spokesman said here. He said the warning would be valid from 5.00 PM today to 5.00 PM tomorrow. "While all deputy commissioners concerned have been asked to take all precautionary measures to avert any untoward incident, the general public has been appealed not to venture in these areas during the warning period," the spokesman added. Cold day in Delhi; fog hampers train services

Cold conditions prevailed in the national capital today as the minimum temperature dipped to 5.6 degrees Celsius, while dense fog in morning hours led to the cancellation of 18 north-bound trains and delayed several others. The minimum temperature today settled at 5.6 degrees Celsius, two notches below the season's average, while the maximum temperature was recorded at 23.1 degrees Celsius, three notches above the normal, a Met department official said. At Safdarjung observatory, visibility was recorded at 400 metres at 5.30 am while the same recorded was 200 meters at 8.30 AM. It was 800 metres at 11.30 and subsequently improved to 1,800 meters at 2.30 PM. The humidity oscillated between 100 and 41 per cent. The Met office has forecast clear skies for tomorrow along with moderate to dense fog in morning hours. Cold wave prevails in Bihar, Gaya coldest at 4.5 degrees

Cold wave conditions continued in Bihar today where Gaya was the coldest place with a minimum temperature of 4.5 degree Celsius. According to the Met bulletin, "cold day" was observed at Bhagalpur, Purnea and Chapra, in addition to Patna where the minimum temperature was recorded at 7.1 degrees Celsius. The bulletin said "severe cold day" was observed at Muzaffarpur, Supaul and Forbesganj. The Met forecast for tomorrow said "cold day conditions" would continue in Patna, Bhagalpur and Purnea.

Severe cold conditions to prevail in Uttar Pradesh

Cold to severe cold conditions are likely to prevail over the next few days at certain places in Uttar Pradesh, where Muzaffarnagar recorded the lowest temperature of 4.2 degrees Celsius. Hamirpur with the minimum temperature of 4.6 degrees Celsius, Lakhimpur Kheri and Agra with a minimum temperature of 4.8 degrees Celsius and Bareliy at 5.2 degrees Celsius were among the other coldest places in the state. The Meteorological office said dense to very dense fog was likely to occur at many places in the eastern parts of the state and at some isolated parts of the western Uttar Pradesh.

Cold wave conditions intensify in most parts of HP

Intense cold wave conditions persisted in most parts of Himachal Pradesh as the minimum temperatures dropped marginally and sky remained partially overcast in the state capital and adjoining areas. The high altitude tribal areas reeled under biting cold wave conditions with the minimum temperatures ranging between minus 14 degrees Celsius and minus 20 degrees Celsius, while Keylong and Kalpa in tribal Lahaul and Spiti and Kinnaur districts recorded a low of minus 4.1 degrees Celsius and minus 1 degrees Celsius. Phulbani coldest place in Odisha at 3.5 degree Celsius

Phulbani in Kandhamal district was the coldest place in Odisha today at 3.5 degree Celsius while nine other places in the state recorded a minimum temperature below 10 degree Celsius, Met department said. Phulbani (3.5) was followed by Sundergarh (5.5), Daringbadi (7), Jharsuguda (7.9), Keonjhar (8.4), Bhawanipatna (8.5), Hirakud, Bolangir and Angul recorded 8.6 degree Celsius each and Sambalpur shivered at 8.9 degree Celsius, the Met said. The state capital of Bhubaneswar which recorded 12.8 degree Celsius yesterday, experienced rise in mercury level to 13.4 degree Celsius while at Cuttack it was 12.8 degree Celsius against yesterday's 12 degree Celsius. Shallow fog has been observed at isolated places over Coastal Odisha while cold wave condition prevailed over some places of interior parts of the state, it said adding that weather has been dry all over. Respite from severe cold in Rajasthan

There was some respite from severe cold in Rajasthan today as the mercury rose by a few degrees Celsius in most areas of the state, a MeT official said. Alwar was the coldest with a minimum of 4 degrees Celsius, followed by 7.8 in Bhilwara, 8 in Pilani, 8.2 each in Banasthali and Mount Abu, 8.5 in Sriganganagar, and 8.8 each in Churu, Swai Madhopur and Bundi. The minimum settled at 9.3 degrees Celsius in Chittorgarh, followed by 9.8 in Dabok, 10.4 in Kota, 10.8 in Jaipur, 11.4 in Jodhpur, 11.5 in Sikar, 11.6 in Jaisalmer, 12 in Eranpura Road, 12.3 in Ajmer and 14.3 degrees Celsius in Bikaner. Maximum temperature was recorded between 26 and 32.8 degrees Celsius at most places in the state. Weather is likely to remain dry in the next 24 hours, the official said.

Respite from cold wave in Punjab, Haryana

The minimum temperature today registered a marginal increase at many places in Punjab and Haryana, providing respite to the people from bone- chilling cold. Amritsar in Punjab, where the mercury had been hovering close to the freezing point for past few days, today registered a low of 8.5 degrees Celsius, four notches above the normal, a MeT official said today. Ludhiana, which recorded 7.6 degrees Celsius, was followed by Patiala at 8.1 degrees Celsius, Bathinda at 9.2 degrees Celsius and Halwara at 8.3 degrees Celsius. Cold conditions unabated in Bihar

Cold conditions continued to prevail in most parts of Bihar today, with Bhagalpur touching the season's lowest at 5.9 degrees Celsius, the Met office said. The state capital recorded a minimum temperature of 7.7 degrees Celsius, while in Purnea it was 6.3 degrees Celsius, followed by 6.6 degrees Celsius in Gaya. No let up in cold wave conditions in north India

The northern belt witnessed plummeting temperatures today with Jammu and Kashmir's Kargil shivering at minus 19 degrees Celsius, even as Phulbani in Odisha recorded a low of 4.5 degrees Celsius. The national capital, however, bathed in sunlight throughout the day and recorded a maximum temperature of 25.5 degrees Celsius, six notches above the season's average, making it a pleasant day for Delhiites. Phulbani coldest place in Odisha at 4.5 degree Celsius

Phulbani in Kandhamal district was the coldest place in Odisha at 4.5 degree Celsius while cold wave condition prevailed in some parts of the state with severe cold wave condition at some isolated places. As many as nine places in the state have recorded minimum temperature of below 10 degree Celsius, the Met department said. Dense fog in Uttar Pradesh; Lakhimpur Kheri coldest at 3 deg C

Dense to very dense fog occurred at certain places in Uttar Pradesh, where Lakhimpur Kheri recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 3 degrees Celsius, the weather office said today. Day temperature was below normal in the Gorakhpur division, while night temperature fell in the Varanasi division. The minimum temperature dropped by a few degrees at most places in Rajasthan due to easterly winds where Fatehpur Shekhawati in Sikar district was recorded the coldest place registering a low of minus 1.5 degrees Celsius. Adampur in Punjab was the coldest place recording a minimum temperature of minus 0.8 degrees Celsius today as the ongoing cold wave conditions prevailing in the state and neighbouring Haryana continued unabated.
