Cold wave continues, Adampur coldest at minus 0.8 deg C

Adampur in Punjab was the coldest place recording a minimum temperature of minus 0.8 degrees Celsius today as the ongoing cold wave conditions prevailing in the state and neighbouring Haryana continued unabated. The minimum temperature registered a further drop at many places in Punjab, a Meteorological Department official said here. Amritsar also reeled at a low of 1 degrees Celsius, down two notches against normal limit. Freezing cold also swept Halwara, which recorded a low of 1.3 degrees Celsius while Bathinda also reeled at a low of 1.8 degrees Celsius. Faridkot recorded a low of 2 degrees Celsius while Pathankot registered a low of 3.7 degrees Celsius. Ludhiana experienced a cold night at 4.2 degrees Celsius while the low at Gurdaspur settled at 4.8 degrees Celsius. No respite from intense cold conditions in Kashmir; Kargil

There was no respite from intense cold conditions in the Kashmir division as Kargil town in the Ladakh region continued to be the coldest place in the state registering a low of minus 19 degrees Celsius. In the nearby Leh town, the mercury settled at a low of minus 13.8 degrees Celsius, down nearly three degrees from minus 10.9 degrees Celsius a day ago, an official of the Meteorological Department said. Odisha braces for cold wave conditions

After a two-day respite from severe cold across Odisha, the weather department today warned of prevalence of cold wave conditions over some parts of the state in the next 48 hours. "Cold wave condition likely to prevail over some parts of Odisha during the next 48 hours," the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in a statement. It said the weather has been dry over Odisha and there was no large change in the minimum temperature, which was appreciably below normal over north Odisha, below normal over south-coastal Odisha and normal over south-interior Odisha. The highest maximum temperature of 32 degrees Celsius was recorded in Malkangiri and the lowest minimum temperature of 6.5 degrees Celsius was recorded in Phulbani in the plains of Odisha, it said. North India reels under intense cold, Kargil records -20 deg C

Intense cold conditions prevailed in northern parts of the country with Jammu and Kashmir's Kargil recording minus 20 degrees Celsius and temperatures remaining below the freezing point in high-altitude areas of Himachal Pradesh. The mercury dipped across the Kashmir and Ladakh divisions due to dry weather and is likely to remain so till Saturday. Last night, Kargil recorded minus 20 degrees Celsius and neighbouring Leh a low of minus 10.9 degrees Celsius, the Meteorological (MeT) office in Srinagar said. No respite from biting cold wave conditions in Himachal

The hills and valleys of Himachal saw no respite from biting cold wave conditions today as minimum temperatures stayed below normal at most places and hovered around the freezing point. Keylong, in Lahaul, and Spiti recorded a low of minus 7 degrees Celsius, while Kalpa, Manali, Bhuntar, Sundernagar and Solan reeled under piercing cold wave with minimum temperatures at minus 1.2 degrees Celsius, minus 0.4 degrees Celsius, 0.2 degrees Celsius, 0.7 degrees Celsius and 1.7 degrees Celsius, respectively. Una and Palampur recorded minimum temperatures of 3.7 degrees Celsius and 4 degrees Celsius, followed by Nahan at 5.5 degrees Celsius, Shimla at 5.7 degrees Celsius and Dharamsala at 6.2 degrees Celsius. Minimum temps drop in several places in Rajasthan

Minimum temperatures plummeted by a few degrees at several places in Rajasthan with Sikar being the coldest place in the state at 3 degrees Celsius, a Meteorological (MeT) department official said. Cold wave conditions prevailed in Churu, Sriganganagar, Sikar and Alwar as the minimum temperatures dipped in Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Bikaner and at the desert state's hill station, Mount Abu, he said. There was a slight rise in the mercury at Eranpura Road, Barmer and Pilani. The minimum at Churu was 3.2 degrees Celsius, followed by 3.5 in Sriganganagar, 3.6 in Alwar, 4 in Mount Abu, 5.1 in Pilani, 6.4 in Bhilwara, 8.2 in Chittorgarh, 8.7 in Jaipur, 9.4 in Bikaner and 10 in Dabok. The maximum temperature was recorded between 23.6 degrees Celsius and 31.4 degrees Celsius, the official said. The MeT department has forecast the weather likely to remain dry, and cold waves and frost conditions in the plains of north-eastern areas of the state in the next 24 hours.

Kargil town freezes at minus 20 degrees Celsius

Kargil town in Ladakh region froze at minus 20 degrees Celsius last night even as the minimum temperature across Kashmir continued to remain several degrees below the freezing point owing to dry weather. The mercury in nearby Leh town settled at a low of minus 10.9 degrees Celsius, an official of the MET department said here. Cold spell to continue; classes suspended in Patna till Jan 16

Bihar today reeled under intense cold conditions with Dehri in Rohtas district recording minimum temperature in the state at 4.8 degrees Celsius. The meteorological department has warned of cold wave and dense fog conditions at many places in the state over the next four days. Biting cold conditions eases in some parts of Bengal

Biting cold conditions eased a little today in the western and southern parts of West Bengal with rise in night temperature, while the northern and eastern districts continued to suffer from severe cold conditions. Coochbehar in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal recorded the lowest temperature in the state's plains at 5.2 degree Celsius, the Met department said. Krishnagar in Nadia district was the second coldest at 6.6 degree Celsius, followed by Asansol that recorded 8.0 degree Celsius. Sriganganagar was today recorded as the coldest place in Rajasthan with a minimum temperature of 3.2 degrees Celsius followed by Churu which shivered at 3.5 degrees Celsius. Pilani, Alwar, Mount Abu, Bhilwara, Chittorgarh and Jaipur recorded a minimum temperature of 4.8, 6, 7, 8.4, 9.6 and 10 degrees Celsius respectively, according to MeT department here. Bikaner, Ajmer, Bundi and Jaisalmer registered night temperature of 10.6, 11.3, 11.4 and 14.2 degrees Celsius respectively, it said.
