Minimum temps drop in several places in Rajasthan

Minimum temperatures plummeted by a few degrees at several places in Rajasthan with Sikar being the coldest place in the state at 3 degrees Celsius, a Meteorological (MeT) department official said. Cold wave conditions prevailed in Churu, Sriganganagar, Sikar and Alwar as the minimum temperatures dipped in Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Bikaner and at the desert state's hill station, Mount Abu, he said. There was a slight rise in the mercury at Eranpura Road, Barmer and Pilani. The minimum at Churu was 3.2 degrees Celsius, followed by 3.5 in Sriganganagar, 3.6 in Alwar, 4 in Mount Abu, 5.1 in Pilani, 6.4 in Bhilwara, 8.2 in Chittorgarh, 8.7 in Jaipur, 9.4 in Bikaner and 10 in Dabok. The maximum temperature was recorded between 23.6 degrees Celsius and 31.4 degrees Celsius, the official said. The MeT department has forecast the weather likely to remain dry, and cold waves and frost conditions in the plains of north-eastern areas of the state in the next 24 hours.

Cold wave conditions prevail in Pb, Hry; Amrtisar coldest at

Amritsar reeled at 1.2 degrees Celsius as the ongoing cold wave conditions prevailing in Punjab and Haryana for the past three weeks continued unabated today. The minimum temperature hovered in the range of 1-5 degrees Celsius at most places, a Meteorological official said here. Amritsar in Punjab was the coldest place in the two states, recording two notches below the normal minimum temperature. Freezing cold also swept Adampur, which recorded a low of 2.4 degrees Celsius, while Halwara reeled at a low of 2.9 degrees Celsius. Piercing cold also swept Bathinda, which registered a low of 3.5 degrees Celsius. Pathankot, too, experienced a cold night at 4.4 degrees Celsius. Kargil town freezes at minus 20 degrees Celsius

Kargil town in Ladakh region froze at minus 20 degrees Celsius last night even as the minimum temperature across Kashmir continued to remain several degrees below the freezing point owing to dry weather. The mercury in nearby Leh town settled at a low of minus 10.9 degrees Celsius, an official of the MET department said here. Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 3.3 degrees Celsius last night up by one degree from minus 4.3 degrees Celsius the previous night, the official said. The night temperature in Qazigund in south Kashmir settled at a low of minus 4.2 degrees Celsius marginally up from yesterday's minus 4.4 degrees Celsius. Intense cold spell continues in north India

A cold wave continued to sweep parts of north India with the minimum temperature remaining under the freezing point in Kashmir and higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh. Cold spell to continue; classes suspended in Patna till Jan 16

Bihar today reeled under intense cold conditions with Dehri in Rohtas district recording minimum temperature in the state at 4.8 degrees Celsius. The meteorological department has warned of cold wave and dense fog conditions at many places in the state over the next four days. In the wake of the prevalent weather conditions, Patna District Magistrate Kumar Ravi has directed all government and private school authorities to suspend academic activities for students up to Class VIII till January 16. The DM has also ordered the school authorities to start academic activities for Classes IX to XII after 9:30 am. "Cold day conditions were observed at Patna and Bhagalpur today. Foggy weather conditions caused travel disruptions in the national capital in the early part of the day. It was cold in the morning with the mercury dipping to 5.7 degrees Celsius. The city had a high of 25 degrees Celsius owing to a sun-washed afternoon. The humidity oscillated between 97 and 32 per cent. Biting cold conditions eases in some parts of Bengal

Biting cold conditions eased a little today in the western and southern parts of West Bengal with rise in night temperature, while the northern and eastern districts continued to suffer from severe cold conditions. Coochbehar in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal recorded the lowest temperature in the state's plains at 5.2 degree Celsius, the Met department said. Krishnagar in Nadia district was the second coldest at 6.6 degree Celsius, followed by Asansol that recorded 8.0 degree Celsius. The Met department has forecast cold day conditions in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and parts of Gangetic plains where dense fog in the morning may affect normal life. Adampur reeled at 2.2 degrees Celsius as there was no let-up in the cold wave sweeping across Haryana and Punjab for the past three weeks with minimum temperature hovering in the range of 2-5 degrees Celsius at most places. At 3.2 degrees Celsius, Sriganganagar coldest in Rajasthan

Sriganganagar was today recorded as the coldest place in Rajasthan with a minimum temperature of 3.2 degrees Celsius followed by Churu which shivered at 3.5 degrees Celsius. Pilani, Alwar, Mount Abu, Bhilwara, Chittorgarh and Jaipur recorded a minimum temperature of 4.8, 6, 7, 8.4, 9.6 and 10 degrees Celsius respectively, according to MeT department here. Bikaner, Ajmer, Bundi and Jaisalmer registered night temperature of 10.6, 11.3, 11.4 and 14.2 degrees Celsius respectively, it said. Dry weather prevails in Kashmir

The minimum temperature in Kashmir division, including Ladakh region, remained several degrees below the freezing point today owing to dry weather. The MET Office has forecast mainly dry weather till January 20. Sky likely to remain clear in Delhi: Met office

Cold conditions prevailed in Delhi last night as the minimum temperature settled at 5.7C, two notches below the average, but the sky is likely to remain clear through the day today, a Met department official said. Humidity was recorded at 97 per cent and visibility improved to 1,000 metres this morning, the official said. The Met office has forecast a clear sky for the rest of the day. "The maximum temperature is likely to hover around 23 degrees Celsius," the weatherman said. Yesterday, the minimum and maximum temperatures were 5.5C and 23.3C respectively.

Cold wave conditions prevail in most parts of HP

Cold wave today swept most parts of Himachal Pradesh with minimum temperatures further dropping in high-altitude areas of the state. Keylong, Manali and Kalpa recorded a low of minus 7.6 degrees Celsius, minus 3 degrees Celsius and minus 1.6 degrees Celsius. Temperatures in high-altitude and other higher hill areas stayed between minus 12 and minus 20 degrees Celsius, the MeT office said. No respite from cold in North India, Leh records -15 deg

Northern states of the country, including Jammu and Kashmir, reeled under intense cold wave conditions today as fog engulfed parts of Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. In the national capital visibility dropped to 400 metres in the early hours due to fog, which also affected train services. The minimum temperature here was 5.5 degrees Celsius, two notches below the normal, and the maximum 23.3 degrees Celsius. Severe cold condition warning in Bihar

The weatherman today warned of severe cold conditions to prevail in the next 48 hours in many parts of Bihar, where Bhagalpur recorded the state's lowest minimum temperature of 4.6 degrees celsius. As per the Patna met office bulletin, Patna recorded a minimum temperature of 6.3 degree celsius while it was 7 degree celsius in Purnea and in Gaya the minimum was 7.7 degrees. It said that the major cities of Patna, Bhagalpur and Purnea may witness dense or very dense fog in the morning with cold day conditions tomorrow, while Gaya may witness very dense fog/mist in the morning. Cold day condition is declared when the minimum temperature touches 10 degrees celsius or lower and the maximum temperature is 4.5 - 6.4 degree celsius below its normal, the met office said.

Dense to very dense fog occurred at a few places over east Uttar Pradesh today, the Met office said. While Muzaffarnagar was the coldest at 2.6 degrees Celsius, Jhansi recorded the highest maximum temperature at 25 degrees Celsius. The day temperatures markedly rose in Gorakhpur and Moradabad, and fell in Bareilley and Lucknow, it said. Most parts of Punjab and Haryana reeled under cold weather conditions with Admapur in Jalandhar being the coldest place in the region with a low of 2.2 degrees Celsius. Chandigarh, the common capital of both the states, shivered at a minimum of 5.1 degrees Celsius, the Met department said. Minimum temperatures in several parts of Punjab and Haryana remained several notches below normal. In Haryana, Ambala, Hisar and Karnal recorded their respective minimums at 4.5, 3.5 and 2.5 degrees Celsius respectively, up to four notches below normal. Cold wave tightens grip in Kashmir; Leh records -15C

The minimum temperature in Leh town plummeted several degrees as the cold wave tightened its grip in Kashmir Valley, where the mercury was recorded below the freezing point at all weather monitoring stations. Leh, in Ladakh region, had experienced an improvement in temperature the previous night when the mercury rose nearly six degrees to settle at a low of minus 7.7 degrees Celsius.
