Cold conditions prevailed in Delhi last night as the minimum temperature settled at 5.7C, two notches below the average, but the sky is likely to remain clear through the day today, a Met department official said. Humidity was recorded at 97 per cent and visibility improved to 1,000 metres this morning, the official said. The Met office has forecast a clear sky for the rest of the day. In the national capital visibility dropped to 400 metres in the early hours due to fog, which also affected train services. The weatherman today warned of severe cold conditions to prevail in the next 48 hours in many parts of Bihar, where Bhagalpur recorded the state's lowest minimum temperature of 4.6 degrees celsius. As per the Patna met office bulletin, Patna recorded a minimum temperature of 6.3 degree celsius while it was 7 degree celsius in Purnea and in Gaya the minimum was 7.7 degrees. It said that the major cities of Patna, Bhagalpur and Purnea may witness dense or very dense fog in the morning with cold day conditions tomorrow, while Gaya may witness very dense fog/mist in the morning. Cold day condition is declared when the minimum temperature touches 10 degrees celsius or lower and the maximum temperature is 4.5 - 6.4 degree celsius below its normal, the met office said.

The minimum temperature in Leh town plummeted several degrees as the cold wave tightened its grip in Kashmir Valley, where the mercury was recorded below the freezing point at all weather monitoring stations. Leh, in Ladakh region, had experienced an improvement in temperature the previous night when the mercury rose nearly six degrees to settle at a low of minus 7.7 degrees Celsius. Sriganganagar was the coldest place with a minimum temperature of 3.4 degrees Celsius, while Churu, Pilani, Sikar and Ajmer recorded the minimum temperatures at 5.1, 5.5, 7.5 and 9.4 degrees Celsius respectively, the local Met office said. The night temperatures at Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Chittorgarh, Jaipur and Barmer were recorded at 10.5, 11.3, 11.8, 12 and 15 degrees Celsius respectively. Icy winds today swept across Uttar Pradesh pushing down the temperature below normal at a number of places in the state, the Met office said. Kanpur and Bareilly were among the coldest places in the state recording a low of 5 and 5.4 degrees Celsius respectively. The night temperature remained below normal in some parts of the state and dense to very dense fog engulfed Bahraich, Varanasi, Bareilly and Lucknow. In the state capital, the minimum temperature hovered around 7 degrees Celsius. In view of the intense cold weather conditions, the authorities here ordered to close schools till Monday.
