Slight respite from severe cold in Raj

Rajasthan today got a slight respite from severe cold with the night temperatures recording between two to three degrees Celsius above normal due to a western disturbance. Sriganganagar was the coldest place with a minimum temperature of 3.4 degrees Celsius, while Churu, Pilani, Sikar and Ajmer recorded the minimum temperatures at 5.1, 5.5, 7.5 and 9.4 degrees Celsius respectively, the local Met office said. The night temperatures at Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Chittorgarh, Jaipur and Barmer were recorded at 10.5, 11.3, 11.8, 12 and 15 degrees Celsius respectively. The weather conditions would remain the same during the next 24 hours, they said.

Cold, fog in Delhi

It was a cold and foggy morning in Delhi with the mercury dipping to two notches below the normal. The minimum temperature recorded at 8.30am was 5.5 degrees Celsius, while the humidity was 100 per cent, a MeT official said. The visibility was recorded at 400 metres at 5.30am, while it improved to 700 metres at 8.30am. The minimum and maximum temperatures are likely to settle around 5 and 23 degrees Celsius respectively, the official added.

Cold conditions in many areas of Bihar

Several areas in Bihar witnessed cold conditions today with Purnea and Forbesganj in Araria district recording the lowest temperature in the state at 5.8 degree Celsius. Patna recorded a minimum temperature of 7.8 degree Celsius while at Bhagalpur it was 6.8 degree Celsius and in Gaya the minimum was 10 degree Celsius. The Patna Meteorological Centre today issued a warning that cold day and severe cold day conditions were likely to prevail at many places in Bihar during the next 48 hours. In its bulletin, Met said that major cities of Patna, Bhagalpur and Purnea may witness dense or very dense fog in the morning with cold day conditions tomorrow while Gaya may witness very dense fog/mist in the morning. Cold day condition is declared when the minimum temperature touches 10 degrees Celsius or low and the maximum temperature registers 4.5 to 6.4 degree Celsius below its normal (maximum temperature), Met official said.

Slight respite from biting cold in western dists of WB

There was slight respite from biting cold in the western districts of West Bengal today, though the northern districts in the state reeled under very cold day and night temperatures. Coochbehar recorded the coldest night temperature in the state's plains at 6.2 degrees Celsius, while the day temperature rose to 15.6 degrees Celsius as dense fog engulfed the district, the Met department said. Neighbouring Jalpaiguri was the second coldest at 6.3 degrees Celsius, with day temperature at 19 degrees Celsius. In the Gangetic plains, Krishnagar was the coldest at 6.6 degrees Celsius, while Sriniketan was a notch higher at 7.6 degrees Celsius. Asansol 8.7 degrees Celsius, Bankura 9.8 degrees Celsius and Burdwan 10 degrees Celsius in the western part of the state were warmer in the night by a couple of degrees as the cold wave conditions abated in these districts. North India reels under cold conditions; fog hits train

There was no let up in chilly conditions in northern parts of the country today as Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh reeled under cold wave with train services hit due to fog. There was some relief for people in Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana from intense cold as minimum temperatures rose in these states even as northern districts of West Bengal continue to experience chilly weather. The national capital recorded a low of 8 degrees Celsius, a notch above the season's average, while train services were hit because of fog. As many as 25 north-bound trains were cancelled, 25 rescheduled and 56 delayed as of 6 pm, the Northern Railway said. Cold, windy day prevails in Delhi

A cold and windy day prevailed in the national capital with the minimum temperature settling at 8 degrees Celsius, a notch above the season's average. The maximum temperature in Delhi was recorded at 23.7 degrees Celsius, four notches above normal, a Meteorological Department official said. Relative humidity oscillated between 92 and 42 per cent. The weatherman has forecast clear skies for tomorrow with shallow to moderate fog in the morning. "The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover around 24 degrees Celsius and 9 degrees Celsius respectively," the MeT department said. Yesterday, the maximum temperature was recorded at 22.7 degrees Celsius while the minimum settled at 8 degrees Celsius.

Cold wave conditions continued to prevail in most parts of Himachal Pradesh, but day temperatures rose by a few notches in the high altitude tribal areas. Keylong and Kalpa in tribal, Lahaul, Spiti and Kinnaur district registered maximum temperatures at 9 degrees Celsius and 9.6 degrees Celsius. Icy winds sweep UP, schools closed in Lucknow

Icy winds today swept across Uttar Pradesh pushing down the temperature below normal at a number of places in the state, the Met office said. Kanpur and Bareilly were among the coldest places in the state recording a low of 5 and 5.4 degrees Celsius respectively. The night temperature remained below normal in some parts of the state and dense to very dense fog engulfed Bahraich, Varanasi, Bareilly and Lucknow. In the state capital, the minimum temperature hovered around 7 degrees Celsius. In view of the intense cold weather conditions, the authorities here ordered to close schools till Monday. The Met has forecast dense fog at many places with very dense fog at a few places in eastern parts of the state over the next few days.

Rise in minimum temp gives Rajasthan respite from cold

There was some respite for the residents of Rajasthan from intense cold as the minimum temperature rose by 1 to 2 degrees at most places in the region, a MeT official said. Alwar was recorded the coldest with 2.2 degree Celsius followed by 5 degrees in desert state's hill station Mount Abu, 6 degrees Celsius in Churu, 6.2 degree Celsius in Sriganganagar, 7 degrees Celsius in Sikar, and 7.7 degrees Celsius each in Pilani and Banasthali. Among other areas, the temperature was recorded 8.6 degrees Celsius in Swai Madhopur, 9.4 degrees Celsius in Jodhpur, 9.5 degrees Celsius in Bundi, and 9.9 degrees Celsius in Jaipur and Ajmer as well. Maximum temperature also rose by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius, remaining between 20.6 and 28.2 degrees Celsius, at most places in the state. The weather is likely to remain dry with no change in temperature in next 24 hours, the MeT department predicted.

Kashmir in grip of intense cold, some respite for Ladakh

Kashmir continued to be swept by a cold wave as the mercury stayed below the freezing point but Ladakh region experienced a respite from the intense chill after the minimum temperature rose by several degrees. The night temperature across the Kashmir valley, except Gulmarg, decreased marginally last night, while there was an improvement by several degrees in Ladakh region, an official of the Meteorological Department said here. Cold condition continues unabated in WB, Jharkhand, Bihar

Intense cold continued to affect normal life in parts of West Bengal as the Met department today held out a ray of hope for cold wave conditions to abate in the next two days with rise in night temperature by a couple of notches. The weatherman forecast cold wave condition to continue in Jalpaiguri and Coochbehar in north Bengal and in Asansol and Nadia districts in the state's Gangetic plains till tomorrow. Minimum temperature is likely to rise by a couple of notches throughout the state from Saturday, bringing some relief to the people. Coochbehar recorded the lowest night temperature in the state at 6.0 degree Celsius, while Sriniketan followed at 6.8 degree Celsius, the Met department said. UP continues to reel under cold conditions

With no let up in cold wave conditions, parts of Uttar Pradesh continue to brave the chill with dense to very dense fog occurring at isolated places across the state. The Met office here said dense to very dense fog occurred at a few places in eastern and western parts of the state, and cold wave continued at a few places, particularly in west UP. Cold to severe cold day conditions prevailed in a few places in the state, it said, adding that day temperatures were markedly below normal in Gorakhpur, Faizabad, Lucknow, Bareilly and Moradabad divisions, just below normal in Varanasi, and normal in the remaining divisions of the state. Night temperatures witnessed no major changes and were below normal in Allahabad, Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Faizabad, Lucknow and Moradabad divisions, and normal in the remaining division of the state.
