BJP wants to create water crisis, supply from Yamuna blocked: Atishi

Delhi Cabinet Minister Atishi on Wednesday alleged the BJP has hatched a "new conspiracy" to target AAP and through its Haryana government has stopped water supply to the national capital. There was no immediate reaction from the BJP Or Haryana government. Addressing a press conference, Atishi, who is also the Water minister, said the BJP has been hatching conspiracies to target AAP ever since the Lok Sabha polls were announced. "Within five days of the announcement of Lok Sabha polls, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was arrested so that the AAP could not campaign in the polls. After he came out on interim bail, they used the party's Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal to frame him but even that plan did not work, Atishi said. "Then they raked up the old issue of foreign funding to the party and now through their Haryana government, the BJP has stopped the supply of Yamuna water to Delhi," she alleged. Atishi said the matter came to light after they started receiving complaints of w

HC rejects plea claiming princely rights over land between Yamuna, Ganga

The Delhi High Court on Thursday dismissed with Rs 1 lakh costs a plea by a man claiming ownership over the land between rivers Yamuna and Ganga from Agra to Meerut and other places, including 65 revenue estates of Delhi, Gurugram and Uttarakhand. A bench headed by Acting Chief Justice Manmohan said Kunwar Mahender Dhwaj Prasad Singh, who claimed to be the successor of a former 'Raja' and challenged a single-judge's order refusing to grant him any relief on his writ petition, cannot agitate his claim in writ proceedings, that too after 78 years of Independence. The single judge had dismissed his petition with costs of Rs 10,000 in December. The appellant, in appeal, claimed that the land between United Province of Agra running between rivers Yamuna and Ganga from Agra to Meerut, Aligarh, Bulandshahar, 65 revenue states of Delhi, including Gurgaon and Uttarakhand, came under the "Princely State of Beswan family" and since there was no accession agreement signed between his forefather

Delhi missing deadline to treat sewage makes Yamuna cleaning goal tough

Having missed the December 2023 deadline to treat all the sewage generated in the city, a crucial step towards cleaning the Yamuna, the Delhi government now strives to achieve the target by March this year, according to a new report prepared by the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC). The delay means that cleaning the Yamuna to bathing standards by February 2025, a key promise made by the AAP government, has proven to be more challenging than the government had expected. According to the report presented on January 10 before the High-Level Committee on Yamuna Rejuvenation, set up by the National Green Tribunal, Delhi has increased its sewage treatment capacity by 35 million gallons a day since January 2023. The city generates 792 million gallons a day (MGD) of sewage, only 667 MGD of which can be technically treated by the 37 Sewage Treatment Plants, or STPs, set up in the capital. At present, these STPs utilise only 71 per cent of their installed capacity, treating only 565 M

Construction of one module of the first metro bridge over the Yamuna being built using the cantilever construction technique has been completed, DMRC Managing Director Vikas Kumar has said and added that the entire work is expected to be completed by September. The bridge -- the fifth metro bridge over the Yamuna -- is being built under Delhi Metro's ongoing Phase IV project. In a recent interview to PTI, Kumar had said that this state-of-the-art bridge would be "visually appealing" and become an iconic landmark similar to the Signature Bridge. Signature Bridge, which connects Wazirabad to the inner city, is "India's first asymmetrical cable-stayed bridge". Its pylon is the tallest structure in Delhi at double the height of the Qutub Minar. The bridge boasts a viewing box at a height of 154 metres that acts as a selfie point. It shortens travel time between north and northeast Delhi, according to the website of the North East district. Yamuna cleaning far from satisfactory: NGT on report filed by agencies

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has observed the cleaning of Yamuna is far from satisfactory. The NGT also observed that the reports filed by agencies, including the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), the Delhi government and others, were deficient on various issues, including not providing the details of the drains being discharged in the river, monitoring the functioning of the sewage treatment plants (STPs) and restoration of the river's floodplains and wetlands. A bench of NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava noted that based on the tribunal's earlier directions, the Delhi government, DJB, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and Haryana had filed status reports about the river. The bench, also comprising Justice Sudhir Agarwal and expert member A Senthil Vel, said the reports were deficient on various issues, including details of the drains discharging both treated and untreated wastewater in the river and the quantity and quality of the discharged wastewater. Also, there was n

Yamuna floodwater yet to recede, despair grips farmers at relief camps

Puja Devi (47) visited the area along the Yamuna river multiple times in the past 15 days in the hope that the water that inundated her home will have receded. But every time her hopes are dashed and she returns to the relief camp dejected. Now, she fears that she will not be able to return to her humble home after officials told them that their shanties were "illegal". They will not be allowed to return even after the water reduces, they were told. While living under constant fear of losing their home, the abysmal conditions at the relief camp are causing further hardship for the family of 14. Puja Devi has been living at the relief camp since July 11. "The meals we get are half-cooked most of the time. It would be better if the government provided us with ration instead of half-cooked food," Puja Devi alleged. She had been living along the Yamuna's bank for decades with her 10 children, husband and mother-in-law, dependent on the agricultural land for sustenance. The family wa

As per the Central Water Commission (CWC), the water level of the Yamuna was at 206.47 metres at 12 noon, more than a metre above the danger mark of 205.33 metres. Inspecting the arrangements at relief camps set up in Shahdara district near the Old Yamuna Bridge, Rai said those staying in the tents must stay put until the water level goes down. "The water level of the Yamuna started going down Monday morning onwards as per reports. There is nothing to worry about. Ample arrangements (including food and toilets) have been made by the government for those affected," Rai said. He further stated that if the water flow from the Hathnikund barrage remained under control, the level of water in the Yamuna in Delhi would go down very soon. "Floods in Delhi was the impact of the diversion of water flow towards Delhi from ..
