WHO Representative 'impressed' with Indian govt's commitment against COVID-19

New Delhi, Mar 17 (ANI): World Health Organization's (WHO) Representative to India, Henk Bekedam on the outbreak of deadly coronavirus on Tuesday said India is doing quite well towards its prevention. He said, "The commitment from Indian govt, the Prime Minister's Office has been enormous, very impressive. It is one of the reasons why India is still doing quite well. I am very impressed that everyone has been mobilised."

Nearly 14,000 New COVID-19 Cases Reported Globally in 24 Hours; Tally Exceeds 167,500: WHO

New Delhi, Mar 17 (ANI): Nearly 14,000 people were infected with the novel coronavirus globally over the past day, bringing the total number of confirmed cases above 167,500, the World Health Organization (WHO) said in its report on Tuesday. A total of 167,511 cases have been confirmed worldwide, with 13,903 new ones over the past 24 hours. At the same time, the global death toll rose by 862 to 6,606.Cases of the virus, which originated in the Chinese city of Wuhan, has been reported in over 130 countries, including India, where over 110 people have been infected.

Coronavirus outbreak: Calcutta High Court to start thermal screening of visitors

Kolkata, Mar 17 (ANI): As outbreak of coronavirus continues to haunt, Calcutta High Court issued a notification to take all necessary measures. From today onwards, Calcutta High Court will start thermal screening of visitors at entry gates. "Physicians from the high court medical unit or other appropriate personnel will be stationed at all the entry points of the main building and use thermal guns to check the temperatures of all entrants, including judges, lawyers and litigants," lawyer further said. "The lawyers advise their clients not to visit the court unless their presence is directed by the court or is unavoidable," told the lawyer. The order was issued by registrar general.

1990 IAF personnel killing case: Khanna's wife hopeful of getting justice

Jammu, Mar 17 (ANI): Nirmal Khanna, wife of Squadron Leader Ravi Khanna who was allegedly killed by Yasin Malik and his other accomplices at Rawalpora in 1990 expressed her hope that justice will be served and demanded daily hearings in the case. "Now, the trial has begun. There were attempts to suppress the case thirty years ago. I am hopeful that justice will be served. I believe in judiciary. I want that there should be daily hearings in the case. Those who had done this should get punishment I trust the judiciary, like people believe in God. I believe truth always triumphs," Nirmal told ANI. A special court in Jammu on Monday framed charges against Yasin Malik and six others in connection with a case related to the killing of Indian Air Force (IAF) officer Squadron Leader Ravi Khanna and three others in 1990. The court slated the matter for further hearing on March 30. On January 25, 1990, four IAF personnel including Squadron Leader Ravi Khanna were allegedly killed by Yasin Malik

Indian Railways introduces 'buzzing bees' to keep elephants away from tracks in Rishikesh

Rishikesh (Uttarakhand), Mar 17 (ANI): Amid the increasing number of deaths of elephants in the country, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) Moradabad division installed honey bee sound system at railway tracks to prevent their deaths. Once an elephant herd is sighted, villagers at once inform the local staff about their presence, the buzzing sound is being played near the tracks to scare them away. "Till now the project has been a success," said the Divisional Railway Manager of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) Moradabad division. Elephants have been long known to be frightened by the buzzing sound of bees and stings.

New Delhi, Mar 17 (ANI): On precautionary measures and facilities for novel coronavirus disease, Director General of Armed Forces Medical Services (Army), Lieutenant General RS Grewal said, "Quarantine facilities have been set up in Jaisalmer, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Gorakhpur, Chennai, Surat, Jhansi, Jodhpur and other places with the help of Navy and Air Force. I would like to tell you all that there is no need to panic at all. It is important safeguard oneself from rumours. I believe that we all can fight from this epidemic." According to Union Health Ministry, a total of 114 positive cases of coronavirus have been registered so far. Two coronavirus patients, one from Karnataka and other Delhi has died in the country.

COVID-19 not transmitted from pregnant mothers to newborns: Study

New Delhi, Mar 17 (ANI): Amid the spurt in cases of novel coronavirus in different parts of the world, a new study which suggests that the contagious virus does not transmit from pregnant mothers to newborns seems to be bringing some sigh of relief. Chinese professors report in the journal Frontiers in Pediatrics that it doesn't appear that the viral infection is transmittable from pregnant mothers to newborns at birth. The study is the second out of China within the last month to confirm that mothers infected with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) during pregnancy did not infect their babies. All four mothers in the current study, which focused on the health of the newborns, gave birth at Wuhan's Union Hospital while infected. Wuhan in Hubei Province is believed to be the epicenter of the current outbreak that has sickened more than 100,000 people worldwide and killed more than 3,400 -- most of them in China. None of the infants developed any serious symptoms associated with COVID-1

UP Police arrest Delhi riot accused in Rampur

Rampur (Uttar Pradesh), Mar 17 (ANI): The Uttar Pradesh Police arrested an accused of Delhi riot from Rampur. Police officials told that he was arrested along with his group in a robbery case. Over 50 people lost their lives during the deadly Delhi riots.
