Unified Korea is more than political symbol: Int. Olympic Committee President

Pyeongchang (South Korea), Feb 07 (ANI): International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach said on Wednesday said that a unified women's ice hockey team from North and South Korea competing at the Pyeongchang Olympics is not just political window-dressing. "With the unified ice hockey team where at the beginning there were great concerns, then the athletes from DPRK (North Korea) two or three days afterwards they were celebrating together the birthday, one of these players, then they say the team is coming together and there I really believe in the Olympic spirit and it will be these athletes finally and many, many million other people, they will believe in this gesture and the athletes are going to show it." Bach said.

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (Pakistan), Feb 07 (ANI): Furious over the killing of a youth, people stormed offices of an alleged militant group and set ablaze two vehicles and compounds in Pakistan's Dera Ismail Khan in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa on Tuesday. The incident took place after an alleged militant group fired at two brothers from Waziristan in which one whose name was Idrees got killed. Scores of Pashtuns people torched the office of a pro-government Taliban commander. The incident comes amid a Pashtun protest in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad.

EAM Swaraj meets Saudi counterpart Adel al-Jubeir

India and Saudi Arabia have historic and friendly relations. The landmark visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Saudi Arabia in April 2016 gave a strong impetus to the mutually beneficial strategic ties.

2 dead after 6.4 magnitude earthquake hits Taiwan

Hualien (Taiwan), Feb 07 (ANI): At least two people died after an earthquake measuring 6.4 on Richter Scale, struck near the coastal city of Hualien in Taiwan. Several buildings collapsed in the incident. The quake struck about 22 km Northeast of Hualien shortly before midnight, and the epicentre was very shallow at just 1km, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said. A number of aftershocks hit the area, but there was no word of any tsunami warning. Hualien is a popular tourist destination. Among the buildings toppled in the quake was the Marshal Hotel, where three people were trapped inside.

His address came in the wake of the mysterious disappearance of Habib ur Rehman, a Kashmiri trader from Rawalpindi who had gone to the city for treatment of his mother. EAM Swaraj arrives in Saudi Arabia on three-day visit to deepen ties

Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), Feb 06 (ANI): Union External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Tuesday arrived on her maiden visit to Saudi Arabia during which she will inaugurate the Janadriyah festival of the Gulf Kingdom, which is home to over three million Indians. The Ministry of External Affairs on Monday informed that during her three-day visit, Swaraj will meet with the Saudi leadership to discuss bilateral, regional and global issues of mutual interest. The statement further mentioned that Saudi Arabia is the fourth largest trading partner for India with bilateral trade exceeding USD 25 billion in 2016-17. As our largest supplier of crude oil, Saudi Arabia accounts for about 20 percent of our total annual imports.

Record snowfall hits Moscow, causes traffic snarls

Campaign's Spokesperson Nadeem Nusrat said the Muhajirs in Karachi are treated as third grade citizens and are also not allowed to protest peacefully. He also said that globally recognised terrorists are allowed to propagate freely in the city. The campaign has launched its second phase in the United States with billboard advertisements. As part of the campaign, nearly 100 taxis are running around the U.S. capital with banners reading #FreeKarachi.

Maldives on boil: Former president, Chief Justice arrested

Male (Maldives), Feb 06 (ANI): Former Maldives president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed, Justice Ali Hameed and Judicial administrator Hassan Saeed were arrested, just hours after President Abdulla Yameen declared a state of 'emergency' in the country. Maumoon along with his son-in-law was arrested by police after breaking down the door of his residence. Abdulla Shahid, a former Parliament speaker, took to Twitter and wrote: "Former President Maumoom Abdul Gayoom and his son in law arrested by Special Operations @PoliceMv after breaking down the door to their residence. #MaldivesInCrisis #StateOfEmergency". The arrest indicates that the crackdown on the Opposition has intensified. The President has refused to comply with the court's order to release political prisoners.

Greeks protest over Macedonia name row

Greece/Macedonia, Feb 05 (ANI): Thousands of Greeks protested outside the Parliament in Athens over Macedonia name row. Greece objects to the former Yugoslav republic's name because it has its own territory called Macedonia, and they argue it implies a territorial claim over Greek land. The objection has come after the country with the same name called itself Macedonia, which the Greeks fear implies a territorial claim over Greek land. It also stirs up emotions of the Greeks who consider the ancient kingdom of Macedonia, ruled over by former king Alexander the Great, to be an integral part of their heritage.

Campaign for the rights of residents of Pakistan's urban Sindh Province kick-started in the city on Dr. Martin Luther King Junior Day with taxis displaying 'Free Karachi' banners participated in a parade.

Male (Maldives), Feb 04 (ANI): Maldives' Joint Opposition Spokesperson Ahmed Mahloof on Sunday said that when he and other leaders went to Parliamentary Board Meeting, they were blocked by security forces. Mahloof said that they were manhandled by the forces every time since the battle of Parliament in July last year. "Today, we went to the Parliamentary Board Meeting and were blocked by forces. Some of us climbed over gates to get in and helped others. This isn't first. Since battle of Parliament in July last year, we always get pepper sprayed and dragged out,"Mahloof said. The military forces had blocked MPs' entry into the premises. Despite Parliament seizure by the military, some MPs managed to enter into the premises and then opened gate for others. At least 12 MPs entered into the Parliament. Protests continued in the Maldivian capital as President Abdulla Yameen refused to follow Maldivian Supreme Court's ruling to release key political prisoners and reinstate 12 parliamentary members. This decision has pushed the island nation into a crisis with likelihood of emergency being declared, as Yameen has got the first Parliament session of 2018 (scheduled for February 5) cancelled, sensing that the Opposition will be in majority because of the apex court order.

Strike in Birgunj in demand for new provincial capital

Birgunj (Nepal), Feb 04 (ANI): Major markets remained closed as protests and a general strike was called by the residents of Nepal's Birgunj. The protestors and some lawmakers from Parsa, Bara, and Rautahat districts have warned of forming a new province if their demand for making Birgunj as the capital is not met with. Protests were carried out by burning tires on the streets. Agitators even warned the leaders of more protests in coming days if their demands are not met.

There were scuffles between the protesters and police in riot gear outside the Chief Justice's residence. The agitators are trying to force Justice Saeed and another supreme justice, Ali Hameed to resign. Eva Abdulla, Member of Parliament, of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) describing the ordeal told ANI over the phone, "Absolute breakdown of law and order. The public is on the edge. I am very concerned as we are facing increased unrest. They (police) have just used pepper spray and tear gas on the crowd." New Delhi, Feb 04 (ANI): Actress Uma Thurman have alleged that film producer Harvey Weinstein assaulted her at a London hotel room after the premiere of 1994's Pulp Fiction. Thurman said that Weinstein attacked her at the Savoy Hotel in London after the release of the 1994 Quentin Tarantino-directed film, which was produced and distributed by Weinstein's company Miramax. She alleged that he was sexually aggressive on multiple occasions, and after an incident in a London hotel room, he even threatened to derail her career.

Kerala Finance Minister compares demonetisation drive to cyclone 'Ockhi'

Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala), Feb 02 (ANI): Kerala Finance Minister Thomas Isaac compared the demonetisation drive by the Center with Cyclone 'Ockhi', which ravaged the Kerala coast, leading to the death of scores of people. Thomas, while presenting the annual budget in the state assembly, asserted that the decision to scrap the currency of high values was like Cyclone 'Ockhi' on the Indian economy. Further targeting the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the Kerala Minister expressed disappointed on the rolling out of the Goods and Service Tax (GST). EAM Sushma Swaraj meets former Nepal Prime Minister

Kathmandu (Nepal), Feb 02 (ANI): In a bid to strengthen ties with neighbouring Nepal, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj met former Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal in Kathmandu on Friday. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj reached Kathmandu on Thursday. On her visit she met the political leadership of Rashtriya Janta Party Nepal and discussed ways to enhance cooperation between the two countries. Earlier, she also met CPN (UML) Chairman KP Sharma Oli and congratulated him on his party's victory in the recent elections in Kathmandu. The EAM is on a visit to Nepal in order to strengthen India's long standing friendship with Nepal.
