36th UNHRC session: 'Terrorism in South Asia' discussed in side event

Geneva (Switzerland), Sep 20 (ANI): A group of scholars, academicians, human right activists and politicians brainstormed on 'Terrorism in South Asia' during a side-event held during the 36th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva. During the interaction, the attendees specifically focused on the region of South-Asia, Terrorism, Indo-Pak relations and the Jammu and Kashmir conflict. The discussions were moderated by Kashmiri writer, Junaid Qureshi, and the Director of European Foundation for South Asian Studies (EFSAS). In an incident of utmost dismay, none of the speakers were of South Asian origin. All of them were from reputed European Universities and they deliberated upon terrorism in South Asia from various perspectives, based on their respective expertise. Earthquake strikes Mexico, over 130 dead

Mexico, Sep 20 (ANI): At least 139 people were killed after a powerful earthquake struck central Mexico, toppling buildings in its populated capital. The Mexico City mayor stated that at least 44 buildings were severely damaged or destroyed in its capital city. The walls of some building sheered off, others just collapsed. Among the damaged were apartment blocks, a school, a factory and a supermarket. Hundreds of volunteers and rescue workers dug through the rubble with picks, shovels and their bare hands. It's the second big quake to hit Mexico this month, striking only hours after many people around the country participated in earthquake drills on the anniversary of the devastating quake that killed thousands in Mexico City in 1985. The powerful 8.1 quake from earlier this month - the strongest to hit the country in 8 decades - left nearly 100 people dead.

Terror incidents in the West have roots in Pakistan, say scholars at UN

Geneva, Sep 20 (ANI): Accusing Pakistan for harbouring and funding terror outfits responsible for incidents in the West and South Asia, the scholars have demanded Islamabad to act. The European Foundation for South Asian Studies (EFSAS), a policy research organization based in Amsterdam held a side-event on Terrorism in South Asia during the 36th Session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. The scholars at the event accused Pakistan for harbouring and funding terror outfits responsible for incidents in the West and South Asia and demanded Islamabad to act. Dr. Paul Stott of the University of Leicester said many terror incidents have taken place in the UK which has its roots in Pakistan. He said, "We can't keep our eye out of the ball, we can't take our eyes off Pakistan, we can't take our eye off the areas where some of the terrorist organizations from Pakistan have influence and able to recruit young people". Baloch activists raise anti-Pakistan, anti-China slogans outside UN headquarter

Geneva (Switzerland), Sep 20 (ANI): Though it was raining intermittently, a group of Baloch activists and their supporters kept standing outside the Geneva-based United Nations (UN) headquarter and protested against the atrocities of Pakistan on the Baloch natives. Holding placards and flags, these protestors raised anti-Pakistan and anti-China slogans and condemned the human rights abuses faced by Baloch people. Military operations in civilian populated areas, enforced disappearances, torture, extrajudicial custodial killings of political activists and students, mass abductions of families, silencing journalists and human rights activists, denying access to media and NGOs are some of the gruesome measures taken by Pakistan.

First democratic Constitution of Nepal turns three today

Kathmandu (Nepal), Sep 19 (ANI): Nepal's 7th and the first constitution after it was declared a Republic nation has turned three on Tuesday. The controversial constitution promulgated in September 2015 had divided the country into two factions. It was endorsed by 90 percent of lawmakers, out of nearly 600 those remained in the Parliament of Nepal. The Madhesh based parties came against the constitution blaming it of discrimination taking down the street and running a marathon protest in the Southern Plains of Nepal.Though the constitution has turned three, the grievances over the constitution still remains. The Election Commission has successfully concluded the third phase of local level elections in a fair, free and peaceful environment. Provincial and parliamentary elections are scheduled to be held in two phases on November and December. The constitution has the mandatory provision of holding the three tier election by first week of 2018 and has been progressing over it.

73% turnout recorded in Nepal's final phase of crucial local polls

Kathmandu (Nepal), Sep 19 (ANI): Nepal on Monday saw a high turnout of nearly 73 percent in the final phase of the local level elections in a Madhesi-dominated province, close to the border with India, as the nation took a crucial step towards cementing democracy amid political turmoil. Madhesi, mostly of the Indian-origin, launched a prolonged agitation between September 2015 and February last year against the implementation of the new constitution, which they felt marginalized the Tarai community.
