Colombo (Sri Lanka), Aug 31 (ANI): Union External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj arrived in Colombo on Thursday to participate in the 2nd Indian Ocean Conference. During the visit, Swaraj met Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. The two-day conference is being jointly organised by the India Foundation, the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS), Singapore and the National Institute of Fundamental Studies (NIFS), Colombo. The theme of this year's conference is 'Peace, Progress and Prosperity' and will involve participants from more than 35 countries.
New Delhi, Aug 31 (ANI): As the United States prepares to increase its troop count in Afghanistan, the Pentagon is coming clean on the number of its soldiers actually serving in the country. Washington admitted that the number is 11,000, significantly more than that what it's said publicly in the past. Previously, defense officials had said there were only around 8,400 troops in the country under a cap set by the Obama administration. But commanders have been using loop holes to try and skirt the restrictions, including bringing in temporary forces.
Spain, Aug 31 (ANI): Thousand of people in Spain threw 160 tonnes of over-ripe tomatoes at each other in an epic food fight known as 'La Tomatina' festival. Over 20,000 people across the world gathered for the messy battle in the small town of Bunol, which takes place annually in August. Partygoers from around the world crammed the narrow streets of Bunol to smear each other with squashed tomatoes.
Texas (United States), Aug 31 (ANI): A mother and her baby were rescued from floodwaters in Texas' College Station as military teams responded to distress signs throughout the area. The Navy's Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron was dispatched to assist with rescue efforts. Earlier, Rescue workers attempted to rescue stranded cows as the aftermath of Harvey left many ranches in eastern Texas underwater. More than 3,000 Houston homes were underwater due to the Hurricane Harvey.
Kathmandu (Nepal), Aug 30 (ANI): A Cabinet meeting on Wednesday approved Election Commission's proposal to hold provincial and federal elections in two phases on November 26 and December 7. The EC had proposed two dates for election, citing logistical management and weather. The Government had decided to hold the two elections on the same date-November 26. Government Spokesperson and Minister for Information and Communications Mohan Bahadur Basnet informed mediapersons about Cabinet meeting. During the meeting, secretary of Ministry of Land Reform and Management Krishna Raj Devkota was transferred to Ministry of Supplies. The meeting also decided to take a loan of 15 billion to improve customs offices across the country.

However, Britain is looking at ways to replicate the trade deals that the EU has with external countries when it leaves the bloc in March 2019. Texas (United States), Aug 30 (ANI): United States President Donald Trump addressed a crowd in Corpus Christi of Texas saying the city can handle anything. The president, after being briefed about the Tropical Storm Harvey and devastating floods in the area, said the government will operate immediately. Trump vowed that the federal government will make all possible arrangements to help people come out of the biggest natural disaster of his White House tenure. "You are special, we are here to take care... We are going to get you back and operating immediately," Trump said. "You know what, it happened in Texas and Texas can handle anything." The slow-moving Hurricane Harvey brought record-breaking rains to Texas killing at least nine people. The natural catastrophe paralyzed Houston leading to mass evacuations. As many as 30,000 people were expected to seek emergency shelter on the fourth day of flood.
Houston (United States), Aug 30 (ANI): A Houston Police officer Sergeant Steve Perez has drowned in the flood waters from tropical storm Harvey. Perez was heading to work when he was caught in floodwaters. "This morning at 8 a.m. the dive team was out there again and within 20 minutes they found him," Police chief Art Acevedo said. Unfortunately, in the darkness, Sgt. Perez drove onto an underpass, which is about 16 and half feet, drove into the water and he died in a drowning type of event." Texas has been drowning in the fury of slow-paced storm bringing along catastrophic flooding that killed at least 11 people. The city of Houston has also been paralyzed as city officials prepare to shelter up to 19,000 people. As the flood entered its fourth day, thousands more expected to flee the area.
Kabul (Afghanistan), Aug 29 (ANI): At least one person was killed and eight were injured in an explosion in central Kabul's shopping street near U.S. embassy. The blast took place outside a bank at a time when security forces personnel were expected to collect their salaries ahead of this week's Eid holiday. It was the latest explosion to rock Kabul and comes a week after United States President Donald Trump committed American soldiers to Afghanistan indefinitely. In May, a massive truck bomb exploded in Afghan's capital diplomatic quarter, resulted killing of over 150 persons and wounding around 400 persons.

Berkeley (United States), Aug 28 (ANI): Thousands of counter protesters took to the streets of Berkeley on Sunday where they clashed with a handful of Trump supporters, leading to several violent clashes. Masked counter-protesters in black stormed over police barricades while police tried to keep the people away from the scene. Several injuries were reported and more than a dozen arrests were made. Police had to escort most of the right wing demonstrators out of the park.
Haunshofen (Germany), Aug 28 (ANI): Every four years, the Bavarian town of Hanshaufen is home to the jolly traditional competition ox racing. Thousands gathered, many dressed in classic Bavarian garb including dirndl dresses and lederhosen, for the competition which has been taking place since 1983. Sixteen competitors took part this year, including a female rider for the very first time. The big lumbering beasts can move fast and it isn't unlikely to see riders falling off their oxen or barely holding onto the saddle as they cross the finish line.
