Madhesi Sanghi Morcha extends support to victim families

Nepal, Feb 06 (ANI): The families of the Madhesis, who lost their lives while protesting for their rights in the newly formed constitution, have not received any compensation from the Nepal government. In a bid to support the victim families, Madeshi Sanghi Morcha has organized an event to collect funds and other essential commodities. In the past six months, around 60 people have lost their lives in the Southern Terai region of Nepal while protesting for equal representation in the newly formed constitution promulgated in September last year. The Madhesis have been protesting for the past six months demanding redrawing of the boundaries of the provinces in Terai region, fixing of electoral constituencies on the basis of population and proportional representation. The prolonged agitation in the Himalyan nation has led to an economic crisis and talks between the protesting parties and the government have failed to address the concerns of the Madhesis.

Taiwan quake: Rescue Ops still on

Taiwan, Feb 06 (ANI): A powerful earthquake toppled a 17-story apartment building in Taiwan, killing at least two people, including a 10-day-old girl, and triggering frantic efforts to rescue dozens of people feared trapped in debris. The epicentre of the quake was located around 48 kilometers southeast of Tainan, at a depth of around 10 kilometers, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

India to renovate schools ravaged by civil war in Sri Lanka

Colombo, Feb 06 (ANI): New Delhi and Colombo signed two pacts to deepen bilateral ties during the ninth Sri Lanka-India Joint Commission. India has agreed to renovate 27 schools ravaged by civil war in Sri Lanka along with the construction of a surgical unit in a local hospital. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and her Sri Lankan counterpart Mangala Samaraweera signed the accord in the presence of officials from both the countries. India took up the issue of its fishermen's arrest by Sri Lankan navy and the rights of minority Tamils with Sri Lankan leadership. Swaraj is scheduled to meet Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena and former president Chandrika Kumaratunga during her two-day stay in the country. She will inaugurate 'Rise of Digital India' exhibition on Saturday as part of 'Sangam - Festival of India in Sri Lanka 2015-16' that will showcase India's growth in technology.

6.4 magnitude earthquake jolts southern Taiwan

Taiwan, Feb 06 (ANI): A massive earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale hit southern Taiwan. According to reports, Tainan in southern Taiwan was worst hit by the quake, where a 17-story residential building collapsed, leaving scores of people injured. The epicentre of the quake was located around 48 kilometers southeast of Tainan, at a depth of around 10 kilometers, the U.S. Geological Survey said. President Ma Ying-jeou is on his way to Tainan, which is Taiwan's oldest city and home to more than 2 million people.

UN calls UK, Sweden to end Julian Assange's detention

London, Feb 05 (ANI): A United Nations' panel has ruled in favour of Julian Assange, who was detained in connection with sexual assault, saying that the UK and Sweden are 'arbitrarily detaining' the WikiLeaks founder. Speaking at a news conference via a video link, Assange said the opinion of the panel was substantial as the lawfulness of his detention is now a matter of settled law. Assange added that this significant victory has brought a smile to his face.

Ansari visits temples in Bangkok

Bangkok, Feb 04 (ANI): Vice President Mohammed Hamid Ansari visited Wat Phra Chetuphon Buddhist Temple and Wat Phra Kaew Temple in Bangkok on Thursday. Government must address genuine issues of people, says former President of Nepal

Nepal, Feb 04 (ANI): During a recent visit to India, Nepal's former President Ram Baran Yadav called upon the government of Nepal to work for the betterment of its people. He said the government should look into some issues which have not found mention in the constitution which was adopted by Nepal last year. Canada, Feb 04: Inderjit Singh Reyat, the only person convicted in the 1985 Air India bombings that killed 331 people, was released from a Canadian prison on January 27. He was in jail for over two decades on charges of making bombs that were stuffed into two suitcases and planted on planes leaving Vancouver. One bomb tore apart Air India Flight 182 as it neared the coast of Ireland, killing all 329 people aboard. The second bomb exploded at Japan's Narita airport, killing two baggage handlers as they transferred cargo to another Air India plane. The blasts were part of a conspiracy blamed on the banned Babbar Khalsa terrorist group seeking revenge for Operation Bluestar - the army action to flush out militants from the Golden Temple in Amritsar in 1984. Japan offers cyber security, introduces sensor for pet animals

Singapore/Tokyo, Feb 04 (ANI): Japan's leading IT and network technologies company, NEC Corporation, has launched a cyber security factory in Singapore as the latest addition to its global portfolio of security operation centers. The opening ceremony was recently held in Singapore. The NEC is already working with the Singapore Government to strengthen the country's preparedness in combating the latest cyber threats. In particular, NEC and the Singapore Economic Development Board have launched the Strategic Attachment and Training Program to promote the next generation of IT cyber security experts. India, Brunei ink three agreements

Brunei, Feb 03 (ANI): India and Brunei inked three memorandums of understanding (MoU) for cooperation in the areas of defence, health, and youth and sports affairs. The MoUs were signed in the presence of Vice-President Hamid Ansari, who is on a three-day visit to the Brunei, and Brunei's Speaker of the State Legislative Council, Haji Abdul Rahman. Wadhwa added the issue of South China Sea was also discussed and they expect the issue to be solved smoothly. Ansari and leaders of Brunei also discussed the issue of militancy.
