People in PoK suffer due to lack of governance and corruption

Muzaffarabad (Pok), Jan 19: Sufferings for the people of Pakistan occupied Kashmir have been increasing day by day. The government which is accused of committing corrupt practices has been found wanting in undertaking any welfare project in the region. The locals blame the political parties for rampant corruption, which led to underdevelopment, unemployment and poverty. The people and government of PoK do not enjoy autonomy and continues to lack basic rights for building a durable democratic system in the region.

Sushma Swaraj leaves for Delhi

Israel, Jan 19 (ANI): External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj left for New Delhi from Israel after concluding her two-day visit on Tuesday. During her visit, Swaraj met President of Israel Reuven Rivlin, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as well as Minister of Defence Moshe Ya'alon, Minister of National Infrastructure Yuval Steinitz and Israeli legislators. She also interacted with the Indian community in Israel.

Birgunj labourers hold massive rally in support of Madhesis

Nepal, Jan 19 (ANI): Twenty thousand labourers in Birgunj converged at Raxual border to carry out a protest, to support the Madhesis who have been fighting for their rights since the new charter came into being in September 2015. Labourers raised slogans against the government of KP Sharma Oli and demanded equal representation in the constitution. Several rounds of talks between the Nepal government and the Madheshi leaders have not drawn any positive conclusions and the prolonged protests have resulted in an economic loss in the landlocked country.

'Fire' Volcano erupts

Mexico, Jan 18 (ANI): The 'Fire' Volcano spewed a large column of gas and ash high into the sky. The ash cloud reportedly shot more than 2,500 meters (8,200 feet) into the air. Located in the southwestern Mexican state of Colima, the 'Fire' Volcano has been bursting since July 9 last year, including three eruptions on New Year's Eve. The Fire Volcano, officially known as the Colima Volcano, is part of the Pacific's Ring of Fire.

Swaraj visits Indian hospice in Jerusalem

Jerusalem, Jan 18 (ANI): Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj visited the Indian hospice in Israel's capital city Jerusalem. Swaraj arrived in Israel on Sunday after her day-long visit to Palestine, where she discussed bilateral ties in her meetings with President Mahmoud Abbas and Foreign Minister Riyad Malki. Indian "hospice" in Jerusalem, which is spread over seven thousand square metres near the Dome of the Rock, has its origins in a visit by Sufi Saint Baba Farid about 800 years ago.

UN delegation meets Madheshi protestors to check human rights violation

Nepal, Jan 17 (ANI): Since the promulgation of the new constitution in Nepal last year, the Madheshi community has been protesting as their "interests have been neglected". The United Nations delegation visited the border area near India's Raxaul district and met agitating protestors. The protestors claimed that not only their demands have been suppressed, but they have also been tortured by the Nepal administration. Talks between the government and the Madheshi community have not yielded any results. The protestors rejected government's plan, saying it did not meet their demands to offer adequate national representation.

UN delegation meets Nepal's Madhesi protesters

Nepal, Jan 16 (ANI): A two-member United Nations (UN) delegation met Nepal's Madhesi leaders as the ethnic community continued its protest, alleging discrimination in the newly adopted Constitution. The UN delegates, accompanied by a guide, visited the border area near Raxaul district and met hundreds of slogan-shouting protesters. Madhesis have been protesting at border crossings with India to demand equal rights for their community after rejecting a government plan, which they said did not meet their call for a redrawing of internal boundaries or offer adequate national representation. The guide, who was also a translator for the delegates, said that the officials were shocked to see Madhesis's situation. About 50 people have been killed in police shooting and arson attacks by protesters, who are demanding that the entire southern plains region, Nepal's breadbasket and business hub, not be split into more than two provinces as the government plan envisages.

Mixed feelings about safety among Indonesians two days after attack

Jakarta, Jan 16 (ANI): Indonesians on Saturday return to their routine two days after a deadly attack in downtown Jakarta, though some were still fearful. Residents visited a memorial at the site of the attack where an Indonesian, a Canadian-Algerian national, and five of the attackers were killed. A visitor from Indonesia's Sulawesi island said he was afraid to go to shopping malls or western food chains. Another Jakarta resident said he was not at all scared after the incident. Security remained tight in and around the area near Jakarta's oldest shopping mall, Sarinah that was rocked by gun fire and bombs.

Police and Madheshsi clash over threat call to Journalist

Nepal, Jan 15 (ANI): Radio Terai correspondent Santosh Kumar Sahu has alleged that a phone call from police control room threatened him on news coverage of Madhesi agitation. The controversy led to protests with people coming out on roads and shouting slogans against the police force. Sahu added the caller told him to immediately report to the police station. I got a call on my mobile phone. The number was from police control room. The person told me to immediately report here. Madhesis are agitating over Nepal's new constitution in which more than 50 people have lost their lives. The agitators blocked the main trade route to India in August last year. The Nepalese Prime Minister K P Oli will visit India in the first week of February in which many key issues are expected to be discussed.

Four suspected attackers dead in Jakarta attack

Jakarta, Jan 14 (ANI): Four suspected attackers were found dead in Jakarta attack. The area has now been secured by the Jakarta Police. Police said parts of Central Jakarta were under tight security as they searched for militants who launched a bomb and gun assault, killing at least six in the attack. Police said they suspected a suicide bomber was responsible for at least one of the blasts.
