Japanese technology being used to improve foundation of tsunami-hit land

Iwate/ Tokyo, Sep 10 (ANI): Some 1,700 people were killed during by the 2011 tsunami disaster in Rikuzen-Takata city of Japan's Iwate Prefecture. To ensure early recovery from the disaster, Japan's Shimizu Corporation is working to improve the foundation of the land by using a three kilometer long belt conveyor system to transport huge amounts of sediment created by the tsunami. In order to protect the residents, this elevated land foundation is being built to a height where it can bear even a tsunami. The belt conveyor drives soil at a speed of 15 kilometers per hour and at a height of 20 metres. The Shimizu Corporation is expected to complete the project in two-and-a-half years through the use of belt conveyer technology. If the company uses trucks to transport the soil, it would take more than eight years to complete the project. Moreover, the belt conveyer system led to the improvement of environmental degradation and also contributed to prevent accidents that might have occurred i

Indian official visits Pakistani charity to resolve stranded girl custody

Karachi, Sep 09 (ANI): An Indian High Commission official on Wednesday visited Pakistan's largest charity in Karachi as part of efforts being made to resolve the custody of a deaf and mute Indian girl Geeta, a charity official said. A Pakistani court earlier this month rejected a petition to send back to India the deaf-mute woman who lost her family when she wandered over one of the world's most militarised borders as a child, saying the two nations should resolve the issue diplomatically. Geeta, a Hindu woman now in her early 20s, was around 11-years-old when she inadvertently crossed the border from India to Pakistan. Prabhat K. Jain, second secretary at Indian High Commission in Islamabad, brought pictures along with him of those Indian families who had claimed the girl. Geeta has lived in a home for lost and abandoned children, say officials at the charitable Edhi Foundation. Indian High Commissioner T.C.A. Raghavan has visited Geeta at the Edhi centre in Karachi and said he would

Islamabad, Sep 09 (ANI): Pakistan's National Security Advisor Sartaj Aziz said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government wants to dictate terms for an Indo-Pak dialogue, but Islamabad will never accept any parleys unless Kashmir is on the agenda. He said the Modi-led government's policy has been anti-Pakistan from day one. Asked about the Minister of state for I-B Ministry, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore indicating that there may be a possibility of carrying out a covert operation within Pakistan to eliminate Dawood Ibrahim and LeT Chief Hafiz Saeed, Aziz said anybody thinking they could do that and get away with it was 'fantasizing'. Pakistan has rejected Indian allegations about the presence of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim in Pakistan. Aziz's remarks came a day before the dialogue between the Director-General Pakistan Rangers and the Indian Border Security Force chief in New Delhi on Wednesday. New Thai constitution draft fails to pass in vote by National Reform Council

Bangkok, Sep 06 (ANI): Thailand's military-appointed reform council rejected a new constitution in a vote on Sunday, a result that pushes back the junta's timeframe for an election to April 2017 at the earliest while a new charter is written. The constitution, which would have been Thailand's 20th in 83 years of at times turbulent democracy, was rejected by 135 members of the National Reform Council (NRC) and approved by just 105. There were seven abstentions. The shooting down of the charter drafted by a military-appointed panel will be cheered by political parties who derided it as an affront on democracy. The biggest bone of contention was a late addition to the draft, the creation of a National Committee on Reform and Reconciliation Strategy. The NRC's rejection effectively prolongs the military's rule to 2017 because it means the whole process needs to start from scratch. s

UK's Cameron bows to pressure to take more Syrian refugees

Lisbon, Sep 05 (ANI): Britain will take in "thousands more" Syrian refugees, said Prime Minister David Cameron. Cameron changed his position after an outpouring of emotion over the image of a dead Syrian toddler on the Turkish coast piled pressure on him to take action. With Europe engulfed in an intractable crisis as thousands of migrants and refugees from the Middle East and Africa seek ways into the continent for safety and better lives, Cameron had come under fire over Britain's perceived lack of solidarity. About 5,000 Syrians who made their own way to Britain since the start of the war in their country have been granted asylum, while an additional 216 Syrians were brought to Britain under a UN-backed relocation scheme. Cameron added that the government would discuss the best approach with humanitarian organizations and announce further details next week. The announcement marked a change of tack from Cameron after he made comments on Wednesday and Thursday that were widely perceiv
