Kathmandu, April 25 (ANI): A powerful, 7.9-magnitude earthquake shook Nepal's capital and the densely populated Kathmandu Valley on Saturday, collapsing houses, leveling centuries-old temples and cutting open roads.Dozens of people with injuries were being brought to the main hospital in central Kathmandu. There is no immediate estimate on fatalities. The Dharahara Tower, one of Kathmandu's landmarks built by Nepal's royal rulers in the 1800s and a UNESCO-recognized historical monument was reduced to rubble and there were reports of people trapped underneath.
Kathmandu, April 25 (ANI): The Assignment Head at News 24, Arun Joshi explained the situation in Kathmandu after the earthquake hit Nepal along with entire northern India. He said that everyone is panicked and several house walls and buildings have collapsed. He added that the intensity was so high in Kathmandu that many casualties are expected. Massive tremors were felt in national capital and throughout North India that lasted between 30 seconds to over four minutes. The earthquake tremors were felt after a huge 7.5 magnitude earthquake in Nepal. In Delhi and parts of the National Capital Region, people were seen running out of their houses and offices after buildings shook for well over two-three minutes.
Karachi, April 25 (ANI): The Pakistani party that has long dominated politics in the commercial hub of Karachi won a seat in a closely watched by-election, poll officials said and dismissed talk that its fortunes are flagging. The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) won just over 95,000 votes in the Karachi seat it has held for years, the Election Commission said. Coming second in the Thursday vote was the party of former cricket star Imran Khan. The MQM's critics say its supporters run underworld rackets. The party denies that, saying it is often a victim of the violence of its rivals. It also says it is a bastion against the spread of Islamist militancy. Party leader Altaf Hussain said in a message to his party workers broadcast on television that the voters have rejected the baseless, indecent and false allegations against the MQM.
Chile/ Argentina, April 24 (ANI): Chilean President Michelle Bachelet travelled to the cities of Puerto Montt and Ensenada to visit families forced from their homes after Volcano Calbuco roared back to life, sending a thick plume of ash and smoke into the sky. The volcano, which last had a major eruption in 1961, has belched a spectacular plume of ash and smoke around 15 kilometres into the sky near the popular tourist town of Puerto Varas, some 1,000 kilometres south of Santiago. Over 4,000 people have been evacuated from the immediate area, authorities said, with the emergency services focusing on the small town of Ensenada, some 15 kilometres (9 miles) from the volcano. No one has been reported killed, and a climber who was close to the summit when the eruption occurred and reported missing, has been found alive and in good health. Given the unpredictable nature of the volcano, Bachelet told media, authorities were on alert for any further explosions.
Islamabad, April 24 (ANI): Pakistan said investigation is under way regarding a 'Pakistani' boat carrying a 200 kg heroin shipment seized by Indian coast guards. India seized 200 kg of heroin from Pakistani drug traffickers aboard a boat on the Arabian sea, a defence official said on Tuesday, in a $15 million haul that is one of the country's largest and comes as narcotic flows escalate from Afghanistan. A joint navy and coastguard operation intercepted the vessel in Indian waters on Monday (April 20), apparently headed for Gujarat, Indian navy spokesman DK Sharma said. Eight crew members from Pakistan were detained and were in police custody in Gujarat, he said. Jakarta, April 23 (ANI): Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj along with Secretary General of Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), Le Luong Minh inaugurated the 'Indian Mission to ASEAN' in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Thursday. The mission has been set-up to intensify relations between India and Indonesia. During her address, Swaraj said that ASEAN lied at the core of India's 'Act East Policy' and at the centre of a dream of an Asian century. After the inauguration ceremony, Swaraj called on former President of Indonesia, Megawati Sukarnoputri. Jakarta, April 22 (ANI): Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj met representatives of 28 African and Asian nations at the Asian-African Conference in Indonesian capital Jakarta on Wednesday. In 1955, the Asian-African Conference, a meeting of representatives of 29 African and Asian nations, was held at Bandung, Indonesia. The conference ultimately led to the establishment of the Nonaligned Movement in 1961. Swaraj arrived in Jakarta on Tuesday to attend the 60th anniversary of the Bandung Conference. Swaraj, who is on a five-day tour to Indonesia, is accompanied by senior diplomats from the foreign affairs ministry for the conference where important discussions are likely to take place in Jakarta and Bandung. New Delhi, April 20 (ANI): A video was purportedly released by Islamic State claims to show its militants shooting and beheading what appears to be around 30 Ethiopian Christians in Libya. A militant speaking in the video portrays Christians as crusaders out to kill Muslims. The video shows about 15 men beheaded on a beach and another group of the same size shot in their heads in scrubland. However, the authenticity of the video has not yet been verified. The apparent killings were similar to past violence carried out by the extremist group, which has expanded its reach from strongholds in Iraq and Syria to conflict-ridden Libya.
New Delhi, April 20 (ANI): More than 900 migrants are feared dead after an overcrowded boat capsized 70 miles from the Libyan coast, the worst maritime disaster in the Mediterranean sea. According to Italy's coastguard, only 28 people have survived the wreck and 24 bodies have been recovered from the waters around the accident site, about 60 miles (about 96 km) off the Libyan coast. A survivor's testimonies suggested there were about 950 people, far more than the initially estimated 700, on board the 20-meter fishing boat. The victims included at least 200 women and some 50 children. Aid groups are calling for the restoration of an Italian navy search-and-rescue operation named Mare Nostrum, which was suspended late last year due to a lack of European funding.
Karachi, April 19 (ANI): Pakistan's Maritime Security Agency (MSA) arrested 47 Indian fishermen, along with 8 boats, for allegedly trespassing on Pakistan's territorial waters. Since the maritime boundaries between the two countries are poorly defined and many fishing boats lack the technology to be certain of their precise location, India and Pakistan routinely arrest fishermen on charges of violating each other's territorial jurisdiction in the sea. The fishermen were handed over to the Docks police station in the port city of Karachi, for producing them before a court. Fishermen from both sides often spend years in each other's jails before being set free and sent home.
Jalalabad, April 18 (ANI): A suicide bomb blast in Afghanistan's city of Jalalabad on Saturday killed at least 33 people and injured more than 100 outside a bank where government workers collect salaries. Police have yet to determine if the attacker had worn the explosives or had placed them in a car. They were also investigating if there was a second explosion after people rushed to the scene to help. Police said a third blast that shook Jalalabad was a controlled detonation after experts discovered another bomb close to the scene of the first explosion. Eye-witnesses said the attack caused many casualties.

Lahore, April 18 (ANI): Hafiz Mohammad Saeed, Chief of Jamaat Ud Dawah (JuD), an Islamist charity linked to outlawed militant group Lashkar-E-Taiba (LeT), flayed the Indian government for the arrest of Masarat Alam Bhat, a Kashmiri activist on charges of indulging in "subversive activities". According to reports, on Wednesday (April 15), over a dozen flags of Pakistan were seen in a rally organized by Hurriyat for welcoming separatist Syed Ali Shah Geelani from New Delhi. On the occasion, senior Hurriyat leader and chairman of Muslim League, Masarat Alam Bhat, shouted pro-Pakistan slogans angering Indian media and pro-India political parties. Islamabad, April 17 (ANI): Pakistan's Foreign Office regretted the "use of excessive force" against Kashmiri leaders in Indian Kashmir. According to reports, thousands of people had gathered in Srinagar to welcome Hurriyat leader Ali Geelani on his return from New Delhi where he had spent three months. On the occasion, Kashmiri leaders had organized a rally during which Masarat Alam, a Hurriyat leader participating in the rally, waved the Pakistani flag as he cheered his leader. J-K police had registered an FIR against Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Masarat Alam Bhat, Peer Saifullah and other separatist leaders for "provocative activities and hoisting Pakistani flag in Hyderpora." Vancouver, April 17 (ANI): Prime Minsiter Narendra Modi on Friday departed for Frankfurt after successfully completing his third and last leg of his three-nation tour. Earlier in the day, PM Modi had arrived at Vancouver from Toronto. He was welcomed and received by Canadian PM Stephen Harper and other senior officials at the airport. Prime Minister also visited the Vancouver's Shri Laxmi Narayan Temple and Gurudwara Khalsa Diwan. Later in the day, PM Modi also attended the official dinner which was hosted by his Canadian counterpart Stephen Harper. He will return back to India early in the morning on Saturday.
