Dhaka, April 14 (ANI): Thousands of Bangladeshis, old and young alike, clad in colourful clothes, thronged the streets of Dhaka to celebrate 'Poila Baisakh' or Bengali New Year on Tuesday. 'Poila Baisakh' celebrations have become an integral part of Bengali culture. It marks the first day of Bengali calendar. People danced to drum beats as they reveled in the celebrations. They carried festoon, replicas of birds and animals and colourful masks in the procession.

Hanover, April 13 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday made a joint statement at the Hannover-Messe, the world's biggest technology fair. Modi and Merkel together had inaugurated the fair on Sunday (April 12). Merkel said there was a large potential of growth between India and Germany that still needed to be explored. The fair, officially hosted by partner country India, is based around 10 parallel trade fairs, all arranged around "core themes", including industrial automation and IT, energy and environmental engineering and industrial subcontracting.

Dhaka, April 12 (ANI): Bangladesh hanged Islamist opposition leader Muhammad Kamaruzzaman on Saturday for war crimes committed during the 1971 war of independence from Pakistan, a move met with an angry reaction from his supporters who called for a protest strike. Kamaruzzaman, 63, of the Jamaat-e-Islami party, was hanged at Dhaka Central Jail after the Supreme Court rejected his appeal against a death sentence imposed by a special tribunal for genocide and torture of civilians during the war.He refused to beg for a pardon from the president. The head of the jail confirmed that the execution took place at 10:30 p.m. The acting head of Jamaat-e-Islami, Maqbul Ahmed, said in a statement: "The government, in a very planned way, killed him in political revenge." The party declared Sunday as a "prayer day" for Kamaruzzaman and peace and called for a general strike on Monday. Supporters of the sentence were soon out hailing the execution, with the Gana Jagaron Moncha youth movement chanting

Afghanistan, April 12 (ANI): Authorities in Afghanistan were investigating whether 100 boys hospitalised after eating food in a school in Herat were poisoned. A spokesman for the Herat regional hospital, Mohammad Rafiq Shirzai, said the students from Fateh high school fell unconscious after eating beans sold by a vendor in front of the school. Herat Police Chief Abdul Jabar Rozi said the boys, aged between 10 to 14, were told the beans would help them pass their examinations. The vendor was arrested later on Saturday and investigators suspected the food may have been deliberately tainted.
