Notwithstanding the global recession, Tamil Nadu has seen a robust growth in its software exports, with the shipments recording a 29 per cent rise in 2008-09 to Rs 36,680 crore, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi said today.
Formally launching the training programme of Information and Communication Technology Academy of Tamil Nadu (ICTACT) at Madurai from here through video conferencing, he said job opportunities in the IT sector also increased despite recession.
He said ICTACT, a consortium of the Centre and state governments and CII, would train 5,000 teachers of technical education institutions who in turn would train 2,500 lakh students in the next two years and make them employable in IT industries.
He said the Centre had sanctioned a special fund of Rs 6 crore for the ICTACT programme. It would help students to learn latest trends in the IT sector, Karunanidhi said.
He said Tamil Nadu was among the first states to announce a seperate IT policy in 1997, which led to the rapid growth of the industry. Last year, the Government had announced several concessions and schemes for the IT sector, he said.
