Centre has no plans as of now to curb rice exports, says report

The government has no plans as of now to impose any restrictions on exports of rice and there are adequate buffer stocks to meet the domestic requirements, according to an official source. There were some discussions on imposing curbs on rice exports but no decision has been taken yet. The government is unlikely to put in any place restrictions, the source said. India, the world's second largest rice producer after China, commands 40 per cent share in the global trade. The country exported 21.2 million tonnes of rice in 2021-22 fiscal year, of which 3.94 million tonnes were basmati rice. It exported non-basmati rice worth USD 6.11 billion in the same period, as per official data. The country exported non-basmati rice to more than 150 countries in 2021-22. With area under coverage for paddy down by 6 per cent to 367.55 lakh hectares so far this kharif sowing season due to less rains in some states, there are concerns that production of rice may fall in the 2022-23 crop year ...

Non-cooperation of govt on Pegasus is admission that it was misused: CPI-M

After a Supreme Court-appointed committee's observation that the Centre did not cooperate with the Pegasus probe, the CPI(M) on Friday hit out at the government saying "non-cooperation" is often an evidence of guilt. The apex court on Thursday said the technical panel appointed by it to probe the unauthorised use of Pegasus has found some malware in five of the 29 mobile phones examined, but could not conclude whether it was due to the Israeli spyware. "The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) strongly denounces the refusal of the Union Government to be accountable before the judiciary and to the country on the use of Pegasus, a military grade spyware, against our own citizens. The committee appointed by the Supreme Court to investigate the use of this spyware has informed that the government was not cooperative. This is unacceptable," the party said in a statement. The BJP-led Centre is acting like a serial killer to eliminate state governments, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia claimed on Friday, as he termed the CBI FIR against him "completely fake" and based on "mere sources". Speaking in the Delhi Assembly, Sisodia said the CBI does not have proof of any corruption in the city government's excise policy. He also alleged that the CBI conducted raids on his residence because the Delhi government's good work was being praised across the globe. HC refuses to stay Agnipath Scheme, asks Centre to file reply on pleas

The Delhi High Court Thursday refused to stay the Centre's Agnipath Scheme for recruitment in the armed forces and asked the central government to file its reply on a batch of petitions challenging the scheme. A bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad granted four weeks to the Centre to file the response. The court asked the Centre to file a consolidated reply on petitions challenging the scheme and separate replies on those pleas which have challenged the recruitment processes in accordance with the previous advertisements in the Army, Navy, and Air Force before the introduction of the Agnipath Scheme. Counsel for one of the petitioners urged the court to stay the operation of the scheme till the petitions are decided. The court, however, refused to stay the scheme saying that it was not passing any interim order and will hear the matter finally. "We will not stay it. If you succeed you will get it," the bench orally said. Advocate Prashant .

CGIT gets presiding officer, Kerala High Court disposes of petition

The Kerala High Court has disposed of a public interest litigation (PIL) which sought the appointment of a presiding officer to the Central Government Industrial-cum-Labour Tribunal (CGIT) here. In a memo field before the HC by the central government's advocate, it was submitted that a presiding officer to the CGIT has been appointed on August 18, 2022. It was submitted that the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India, has issued an office order appointing H G Nagarathna as the presiding officer of CGIT here. "Once the Presiding Officer takes charge, the Gazette notification would be issued", the memo said. The HC took the memo on record and disposed of the PIL, filed by the Industrial Law Practitioners' Forum. The new presiding officer has a tenure of four years.

Telangana power utilities on Friday accused the Centre of restricting them to participate in power purchases through exchanges citing overdues. Power System Operation Corporation Ltd (POSOCO) on Thursday asked three power exchanges -- IEX, PXIL and HPX -- to restrict electricity trading by 27 discoms in 13 States, including Telangana, having outstanding dues towards gencos. Transmission Corporation of Telangana and Genco CMD D Prabhakar Rao, in a press release, said Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao and Power Minister Jagadish Reddy held a review meeting and directed the discoms to supply electricity to the people and consumers without any difficulties. The officials said the State could not draw 20 million units today as the Centre restricted the State power utilities from participating without any notice.
