Perhaps there should be a fire here that will burn all this down — then I will be left with that much less to take care of,” he says laughing. That’s Ashish Khokar, the silver-haired, pony-tailed son of acclaimed dance scholar and historian Mohan Khokar, currently the custodian of his father’s gigantic collection of dance memorabilia. He is speaking, maybe only half in jest, about the exhibition currently on in Delhi, “A Century of Indian Dance: 1901-2000,” where “less than five per cent” of what his father had picked up in the course of a lifetime pretty much dedicated to dance is on display for the first time — this ranges from dance costumes donated by acclaimed artistes like Odissi exponent Sanjukta Panigrahi, gramophone records and rare photographs, mostly taken by Mohan Khokar, to dolls and masks of dancers.
