Adani commences 60 MT coal terminal; to expand further

Having commenced world's largest automated import coal terminal on the West Port at Mundra at a capacity of 60 million tonnes, Ahmedabad-based infrastructure conglomerate Adani Group now intends to hit the 100 million tonnes mark soon.
Announcing the commencement of the terminal, Gautam Adani, chairman Adani Group said, "This complex green field project was also implemented in a record time of less than 30 months which is yet another testimony of Adani Group's commitment to develop infrastructure projects in the shortest span. Further, the same terminal is under further expansion to achieve 100 million tonnes capacity."
This coal terminal is set to ensure flow of coal to Adani Power, Tata Power's project at Mundra and several utility companies in western and northern hinterland of the country. Also, Adani Group's power business arm, Adani Power Limited (APL), successfully synchronised India's first supercritical unit of 660 Mw at Mundra in Kutch district of Gujarat. With synchronisation of this unit APL's coal fired thermal generation capacity stands at 1980 MW, making Adani Power the third largest power generating company in private sector. "We have successfully synchronised country's first 660 MW super critical unit at Mundra on Thursday. The supercritical technology will make our operation efficient and in turn preserve environment. Displaying Adani Group's commitment of growth with clean energy, the project has been certified for carbon credit under United Nations Framework on Climate Change," said Adani.
APL is setting up 4620 Mw coal fired power plant at Mundra, consisting of four units of 330 Mw and five units of 660 Mw. The 660 Mw units are based on energy efficient and environment friendly super critical technology. On completion of the power project in March 2012, Mundra Power Plant will become the largest coal fired station in India and one of the top five in the world. The financial closure of the entire 4620 MW project at Mundra has already been achieved, said Adani.
Apparently, APL is implementing various projects totaling 16,500 Mw which will be completed by 2015 as part of the company's vision to create generation capacity of 20,000 Mw by 2020. "We remain confident that 20,000 Mw will be created much ahead of the target year of 2020," he added.
Meanwhile, the company is also implementing nearly 1000 km long high voltage DC (HVDC) double circuit line connecting Mundra power station to northern India, which will be commissioned by March 2011. According to Adani, it is set to become the first private sector HVDC transmission project in the country ensuring free flow of power between western and northern hinterland.
