Beams Hospital to set up 10 clinics

BS Reporter Mumbai/ Pune
Bombay Endoscopy Academy and Centre for Minimally Invasive Surgery (Beams) Hospital will invest Rs 90-95 crore over the next two years for setting up 10 clinics for treatment of fibroids and training doctors in laparoscopic surgery across India.

Fibroids are benign tumors of the uterus. According to an international study, it affects 25 per cent of women between the age group of 18 and 50. India has 100 million women in this age group of which close to 25 million women suffer from fibroids, said Rakesh Sinha, managing director, Beams Hospital.

The hospital currently has a 32-bed hospital in Mumbai. "We will invest Rs 90-95 crore in the next two years to expand our Mumbai hospital to a 100-bed hospital, and to open 10 clinics in India," said Sinha.

Pune would be the first city to get a fibroid clinic in the next three months and this would be followed by Delhi, Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, Kochi, Chennai, Hyderabad and Bangalore, he added.

The clinic in Pune would have 25-30 beds and would also train doctors. Till date, the hospital has trained 500 doctors in laparascopy. "There are no formal training institutes or courses to learn laparoscopy," said Sinha.

With laparoscopy, patients can have a minimally invasive surgery and avoid the traditional surgery where large cut and scars are left in the abdomen for removal of the fibroids, he said.
