While country's overall job creation has witnessed a decline by over 21% between January and December 2012 period so far, an industry study showed that the first half period (January - June) of the year generated more jobs as compared to the second half.

According to a study conducted by Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Assocham), new job generation in various sectors of the economy  across India was higher in January-June period as compared to that in the later half period.

"A total of over 530,000 jobs were generated during the aforesaid period across India with over 280,000 jobs in first half of the year and over 240,000 jobs during July-December 15. Besides, 2012 saw a decline to the extent of over 21% in the new job generation in various sectors of the economy between January-December mid across India." Assocham study - 'Job Trends Across India in 2012' revealed.

"The analysis shows that job market has slightly recovered during the course of last six months as the employment generation growth rate declined by about 15% between July-December 15 while the job generation growth in India declined by over 25% during the first six months of the year," said D S Rawat, national secretary general, Assocham.

"This change is presumably due to slew of positive steps taken by the government during this period," he added.

Delhi and National Capital Region (NCR) topped the list with over 110,000 jobs being generated between January 1-December 15, 2012. "Mumbai generated over 77,000 jobs followed by Bangalore, which generated over 75,000 jobs and Chennai at over 44,000 jobs generation. And the least number of jobs were generated in Kolkata at over 25,000 jobs amid the top five metro centres," said Rawat.

"Mumbai stood second with 259% growth in job generation in the first half of the year followed by Hyderabad, which registered a growth of 114%, Ahmedabad with 93% growth and Chennai with 81% growth," the study revealed.

Besides, Ahmedabad emerged as the only city in the state of Gujarat with close to 100% rise in job generation in the first six months of the current year. With about 16,350 jobs generated between January-December 15, 2012 Ahmedabad leads other Gujarat cities in job generation, the apex industry body Assocham stated.

While in rest of the cities in Gujarat, job generation growth dipped by about 26-35% between January-December 15, 2012.

"With about 4,300 jobs, hospitality sector accounted for maximum number of new jobs generated in Ahmedabad," said Bhagyesh Soneji, chairperson of Assocham Gujarat Council.

While Vadodra ranked second with over 5,000 jobs generated in the city during the aforesaid period followed by Surat with over 3,600 jobs generated, Gandhinagar ranked last with least number of jobs generated in the state capital with just over 1,100 jobs during the period under consideration.

Information technology and enabled services and IT hardware together generated about 2,300 jobs followed by biotechnology, logistics, architecture and other manufacturing at about 1100, 1000, 900 and 800 jobs respectively.

However, as per the study, in the second half of the year (July-December), job generation growth in Ahmedabad plummeted by about 28%

The Assocham Research Bureau (ARB) sourced the inputs primarily from data tracked on a daily basis for vacancies posted by about 4,000 companies via job portals like timesjobs.com, naukari.com, monster.com, shine.com and job related advertisements published in national and regional newspapers for about 56 cities and 32 sectors offering job opportunities.

On the national level, academics and education sector registered an upward spiraling job generation growth of over 16% in the first six months of the current year. While the job generation growth dipped by over 10-50% in the remaining sectors during this period.

According to the analysis, aviation sector registered a job generation growth rate of over 78% in the later half till December 15, 2012 followed by sports at 41% and retail with six% growth in job creation. While rest of the sectors registered a dip in job generation ranging over one to 46% during this period.
