Lanco Power aims to double capacity to 2,640 MW

Lanco Babandh Power Ltd has proposed to scale up capacity of its proposed coal-fired power plant in the state from 1,320 MW to 2,640 MW.

The company has also sought administrative approval for ash pond and ash pipe corridor land.

The state energy department has called the company authorities for a meeting to discuss the company's proposal and signing of supplemental MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) for capacity expansion.

G Mathivathanan, secretary (energy) could not be reached for comments on the matter.

Lanco Babandh Power had initially proposed to set up 1,320 (2x660) MW power plant at Khadagprasad in Dhenkanal district. The state government has signed 29 MoUs (Memorandum of Understanding) with the IPPs, with a combined capacity of 38,000 MW out of which the state share will be 6,774 MW. Only Sterlite Energy had commissioned the first unit (600 MW) of its 2,400 MW coal-based power station at Burkhamunda near Jharsuguda.

 

Five more independent power producers (IPPs)- Jindal India Thermal Power Ltd (1,200 MW), GMR Kamalanga Energy Ltd (1,400 MW), Monnet Power Company Ltd (1,050 MW) and Maa Durga Thermal Power (60 MW) are scheduled to commission their projects by the end of this year.
