Reliance Retail launches largest hypermarket

Reliance Retail launched the country's largest hypermarket under the brand name RelianceMart today. The hypermarket is the third retail format to be launched by Reliance Retail after supermarket format Reliance Fresh and consumer electronics concept mega store Reliance Digital.

"Though the hypermarket is a popular format in the country, RelianceMart goes beyond that by firstly being huge in size, as well as by offering some unique services to shoppers like tailoring, shoe repair, watch repair, a photo shop, gifting services and laundry services all within the store," said Raghu Pillai, president and chief executive, operations and strategy, Reliance Retail.
Pillai added that for the first time, automotive accessories had also been added to the merchandise in a retail format. Reliance Retail expects a top line of Rs 1,000 for a sq ft each month from RelianceMart. The hypermarket has also launched a host of Reliance's in-house brands in apparels, luggage and sports categories. With RelianceMart, the company intended to re-position its Vimal brand of textile and apparel, said Parimal Nathwani, executive, corporate affairs, RIL. Reliance Retail would be selling the products on an EDLP (every day low price) basis at prices 15-20 per cent less than the market prices.
