A day before Diwali, nine persons were killed and 15 injured as crackers exploded in a private fireworks manufacturing unit near Kumbakonam.
While the cause was not known immediately, reports states that the workers were working inside the unit, where the crackers burst on Friday. The condition of two of the injured, admitted to the government hospital in Kumbakonam, is stated to be serious.
Sources said that the cracker unit was operating illegally inside a shed, which was covered with tin sheets.
While the workers were in the unit, suddenly the accident happened and eight people were dead on the spot and people who got injured were rushed to Kumbakonam and Thanajavur medical hospitals.
