Local farmers in the surrounding villages protested against the project, as it may adversely impact the environment

BS Reporter Chandigarh
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is scheduled to visit Haryana during first week of January 2014 where he would lay the foundation stone of Rs 23,502-crore nuclear power plant to be set up at Gorakhpur in Fatehadbad district. He would also address a public meeting.

Department of Atomic Energy Additional Secretary C B S Venkataramanna said about 1,503 acres of land had been acquired for setting up the nuclear power plant and compensation amounting to Rs 450 crore had also been given to the farmers for the same. The scientists of Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) had conducted various surveys and tests at the site of the plant.

Local farmers in the surrounding villages protested against the project, as it may adversely impact the environment. The local functionaries worked extensively to pacify the farmers. Since the Lok Sabha elections are round the corner, the ruling Congress in the state is making planned efforts to commence the project.

A road will also be constructed connecting Gorakhpur to Kajalheri to provide better traffic facility to people. Gorakhpur would be developed as a model village under corporate social responsibility and for this, a detailed action plan has been provided to NPCIL which would cover various issues.

The area has many wildlife species and special arrangements have been made for their conservation. In this regard, directions have been issued to NPCIL so that better and safe place could be provided to the wildlife species.
