In a move that could help increase supplies of fruit and vegetables in Delhi, Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung has issued orders to delist fruits and vegetables from the Azadpur, Keshopur and Shahdara Agriculture Produce Marketing Committees (APMC) or mandis in Delhi. Thus, Delhi has become the first state in the country to delist fruit and vegetables from APMC, after the Narendra Modi government took charge in May.

Officials in the know said a notification to delist fruits and vegetables from the three mandis was issued a few days ago and objections or suggestions can be sent in the next 45 days, after which it would be formally ratified.

The step will ensure that growers will have the freedom to sell their produce outside the purview of the mandis and it will be not mandatory on them to sell through the mandis. "In pursuance of the provisions of sub-section (1) of section 3 read with section 4 (4) of the Delhi Agriculture Produce Marketing (Regulation) Act, 1998 (Delhi, Act of 1999), the LG, government of National Capital Territory of Delhi, is pleased to declare his intention of ceasing the regulation of marketing of such agricultural produce of fruit and vegetables in the respective market areas of the above-mentioned marketing committees in the NCT of Delhi," the notification said.
