India is developing good competition policy: WTO

Press Trust of India Paris

India is developing an effective "competition policy" and is also making significant efforts to strengthen its intellectual property rights regime, a top WTO official has said.

World Trade Organisation's Director (Intellectual Property Division) Antony Taubman said that India is a good example in terms of balancing sustainable development initiatives with Intellectual Property Rights enforcement.

"India is developing a good competition policy. To ensure strong IPR regime, the country has put in very significant resources not just on the legislative side but also on legal and institutional aspects," Taubman told PTI here.

He pointed out that India also has the technology power as well as the platform for innovations, that would help in having a good IPR regime.

When asked about India approaching the WTO against the European Union's move to seize drug shipments, he said India has notified a complaint and "consultations" were on. However, he declined to provide further details.

He was in the city to participate in the global congress on combating counterfeiting and piracy.
