India sees less than 3% of net attack origins

BS Reporter Chennai/ Bangalore

India has ranked tenth in the list of countries where most of the Internet atta-cks originated in the first quarter of 2008, according to a recent report by web services provider Akamai. Just a mere 2.53 per cent of the total attack traffic had its origin to India in the Q1, whereas China lead the list by contributing 16.77 per cent of the total Internet attacks, cites Akamai's inaugural 'State of the Internet' report.

During the quarter, 14.33 per cent of the global cyber attacks originated from the US, followed by Taiwan and Venezuela with 11.82 per cent and 8.89 per cent respectively. About a third of the Internet attacks were originated from China and US, combined.

Akamai observed attacks traffic originating from 125 countries around the world, of which the top 10 countries contributed about 75 per cent. The attack traffic were mainly targeted at 23 unique network ports, with attacks such as worms, viruses and bots.

The report which promises to look at the broadband connectivity across different geographies says that the undersea cable cuts in the Mediterranean Sea in the first quarter of 2008 significantly impacted the Internet connectivity between the Middle East and Europe. This affected Internet connectivity into and out of the countries such as Egypt, Pakistan, Kuwait and India.

According to data collected by Renesys, the cuts in undersea the cables impacted over 1,000 customer networks in Egypt and 900 customer networks in Pakistan. This also affected nearly 500 customer networks in India.

Akamai publishes its rep-ort from the data gathered across its global server network. The company is planning to release its second quarter 'State of the Internet' report in August.
