The aviation industry has sought high-tech status for the sector and also urged the government to set up a Civil Aviation Commission to speed up its growth.

The industry leaders were speaking at the three-day Aviation Conclave 2010, organised by the Aeronautical Society of India.

PS Goel, chairman of Recruitment and Assessment Centre, mooted the idea of an Aeronautical Commission on the lines of Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) that would cover the entire spectrum of the industry, right from product conceptualisation to manufacture, technology development and support services such as maintenance, repair and overhauling (MRO).

Kota Harinarayana, Pratt & Whitney Chair Professor, Hyderabad Central University, who was the chief designer of India’s light combat aircraft programme, suggested that the aviation sector should be granted high-tech industry status.
