OBC quota: Karunanidhi writes to PM

The chief minister of Tamil Nadu, M Karunanidhi, has written to the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, supporting the proposal of implementing 27 per cent reservation for other backward classes (OBCs) for admission to the educational institutions contolled or financed by the central government.
In a press statement, Karunanidhi said the reservation for the OBCs in educational institutions like Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Indian Institute of Managements (IIMs) and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) had been a long pending demand of Tamil Nadu.
The statement further said that an ordinance may be proposed to implement this reservation.
"As the very future of the downtrodden communities is linked with affirmative action, we request that this announcement may be implemented fully without any dilution or postponement," he added.
