Peace deal to end Dimasa insurgency in Assam inked

BS Reporter Kolkata/ Guwahati

Political solution to two decades-old Dimasa insurgency in Assam was arrived at on Monday in New Delhi when Dimasa militants, under the banner of Dima Halam Daogah (DHD), signed a peace accord with the Centre and Assam government to end insurgency in Dima Hasao district (earlier known as North Cachar Hills district) and tread the path of peace and democracy.

The Memorandum of Settlement (MoS) aims at providing a Bodoland-type political solution to Dimasa inhabited areas of South Central Assam.

As part of the restructuring and empowerment process, the existing North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) will be renamed as the Dima Hasao Autonomous Territorial Council (DHATC).

The Assam government has agreed to re-organise the existing Autonomous district under the 6th Schedule of the Constitution into three administrative units for better administrative and developmental administration, besides agreeing in principle to increase the number of members of the restructured council.

39 subjects will be transferred to the Council under Para 3A of the 6th schedule of the Constitution; conferring legislative powers.
