The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) said the tariffs announced today by service providers without taking approval would be reviewed in the next two weeks.

Allowing telecom service providers to implement tariffs based on the interconnect charges without approval, the regulator said operators would have to abide by its guidelines. If any of the tariff plans violated the norms, Trai said it would intervene.

Till yesterday Trai had maintained that operators had to get their tariffs approved before implementing them based on interconnect charges.

However, the regulator today said there was not enough time to go through all the tariff plans because operators had submitted them as late as April 28. The Trai move is an interim one, and operators filing their tariffs after May 31 have to take its approval.

 

Justifying the move, Trai Chairman Pradip Baijal, said:
