SBI to securitise 25-30% assets: Purwar

Press Trust of India Mumbai
A K Purwar, chairman of State Bank of India (SBI), today said the bank plans to securitise about 25-30% of the total asset portfolio in the coming years.

"We are trying to take tottering steps, and will be securitising quite a bit starting from June," Purwar said on the sidelines of the 16th Asian Corporate conference organised by the Asia Society and CII.

Maintaining that the amount will be huge, Purwar stressed that ultimately the bank is aiming at securitising 25-30% of the total asset portfolio.

"Not immediately, but it will take a couple of years," he said, adding that the bank will take small steps, get a feel of the market and then scale it up.

"Securitisation is becoming a supplementary source of income. Globally, securitisation accounts for 25-30% of the total assets. It is not there in India because we are always stressed with liquidity but it has to change now," Purwar said.
