Fund managers in profit-taking mode

Following weeks of buying the Smart Portfolios fund managers last week resorted to profit-taking as the broader markets took a breather. For the week ended August 7, 2009, the fund managers cumulatively sold stocks worth Rs 9.76 lakh at the net level. In terms of weekly returns, it was mixed week for Smart Portfolios as the benchmark BSE 200 index.

While a couple of fund managers saw a marginal decline in their respective networth, the others saw an increase in their portfolio values.

In the week under review, the benchmark networth declined 3.17 per cent to Rs 10.38 lakh from Rs 10.72 lakh in the preceding week. The BSE 200 index networth, however, is up 3.77 per cent when compared to the start of the Smart Portfolios with an initial corpus of Rs 10 lakh on September 1, 2008.

 

Amar Ambani’s networth rose 5.35 per cent, a gain of Rs 87,000, Anand Agarwal logged a weekly gain of 4.33 per cent, up Rs 74,000. On the other hand, Kashyap Pujara’s portfolio value depreciated by 1.57 per cent, down Rs 21,000, and Sadanand Shetty saw a meagre cut of 0.13 per cent (Rs 2,000) in his portfolio value.

CASH LEVELS DOUBLE

ANAND AGARWAL Head - Products & Investments, Reliance Money

Anand Agarwal sold stocks worth Rs 3.10 lakh at the net level, his gross purchases totaled Rs 9.33 lakh, while his gross sales stood at Rs 12.43 lakh. He booked smart gains on investments in Sintex, Navin Flourine, TCS, Reliance Infra, MRF and Amtek Auto. SRF is the top performing stock in his portfolio. His cash levels have more than doubled to Rs 6.15 lakh in the week under review from Rs 3.05 lakh the week before. Agarwal’s networth now stands at Rs 17.82 lakh, up 78.20 per cent.

Sadanand Shetty bought stocks worth Rs 5.05 lakh and sold securities worth Rs 6.37 lakh, resulting in net sales of Rs 1.32 lakh. Taj GVK Hotel, Bharat Forge and Larsen & Toubro are the best performing stocks in his current picks. He booked smart gains in Exide, JSW Steel, IVRCL Infrastructure, Taj GVK Hotel, DLF and Aurobindo Pharma. Shetty’s networth has appreciated by half since the start of Smart Portfolios to Rs 15.06 lakh as of date, with balance cash of Rs 2.61 lakh.

Kashyap Pujara was comparatively inactive last week, with just four trades, three of which were on the buy side. His total purchases outpaced total sales by Rs 82,000. His gross purchases stood at Rs 1.54 lakh, while he sold stocks worth Rs 72,300. The top performing stocks in his portfolio are Century Textiles, Aditya Birla Nuvo, Balrampur Chini and Madras Cements. Pujara’s portfolio value now stands at Rs 13.14 lakh, up 31.38 per cent. He now holds Rs 1.12 lakh in cash.
