Gems, Jewellery Exports Up 39% In Apr-May

The gems and jewellery industry has reported a 39 per cent increase in exports in the first two months (April-May) of the current financial year. It has resulted in exports worth $1.23 billion, up from $890.70 million during the corresponding period of 2001.
Gems and jewellery exports accounted for 17 per cent of the total exports in 2001-02. Of these, cut and polished diamonds crossed the $1 billion export target, an increase of 42 per cent from $743.38 million in April-May 2001.
Gold jewellery exports recorded a 28 per cent growth to touch $113.12 million during the same period, compared to $88.63 million in 2001. Coloured gemstones recorded a 12 per cent increase.
