The Brazilian Presidential candidate Eduardo Campos has reportedly died in a plane crash in Sao Paulo state.

The plane carrying the 49-year-old political leader along with four other passengers and two pilots crashed in a residential area in the port city of Santos due to bad weather, reported the BBC.

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff paid her tribute to the leader by saying that Brazil had lost a great comrade and a great political leader. She has also declared three days of national mourning and cancelled campaign events.

Campos was campaigning for the October presidential elections in Brazil and was trailing behind at the third position in opinion polls. A father of five-children, he had also served two terms as the governor of the north-eastern state of Pernambuco.
