Lack of stretcher claims lives of pregnant woman, baby in Mirzapur

Deteriorating health facilities at hospitals in Uttar Pradesh have been magnified after a man in Mirzapur was forced to carry his pregnant daughter-in-law to the emergency ward of the district hospital as no stretcher was available.
The pregnant woman, however, died after giving birth to a stillborn baby during a caesarean operation. The relatives of the deceased accused the doctors of negligence.
"We brought her (victim) to the district hospital at 3 a.m., where she was diagnosed with diarrhoea. We waited for doctor till 8 a.m. but since no one was available, we took her to a private hospital where they refused to treat her," kin of the deceased woman said.
"Due to doctor's negligence, my daughter-in-law and her baby died. We tried our best to save them," said the woman's tearful father-in-law.
However, the hospital authorities dismissed the allegations, saying that proper care was provided to the woman.
"Baby had died even before woman was operated upon; there was no delay in delivery from our side," said. Dr Sanjay Pandey, the hospital's Chief Medical Superintendent.
