Police here have recovered a landmine and a rifle near Lalgarh village in West Midnapur District of West Bengal.
Police officials said that it was not clear how the mine had got there.
"As of now, it is hard to say how it was put here. First, we have to make sure that it does not lead to any damage, Once we have defused it, then we can go on to investigate where and how it came here," said Superintendent of Police (SP) from West Midnapur, Bharati Ghosh.
The landmine, which was placed near a canal leading to Lalgarh was later defused.
The village caught the media's attention in November 2008 when guerilla Maoists launched an attack on police forces and cadres of the political party Communist Party of India -Marxist (CPI-M).
In 2009, Operation Lalgarh was launched by security forces to smoke out the Maoists from the region.
