Manish Tewari urges withdrawal of I-B Ministry's notice to TV channels

ANI New Delhi

Congress leader Manish Tewari on Sunday condemned the Information and Broadcasting Ministry's show cause notices to three TV news channels for their coverage of Yakub Memon's hanging, and urged its withdrawal.

"As far as courts are concerned, the courts have the power of contempt. If they find any content to be objectionable, they can always invoke those powers. So, why should the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting unnecessarily get into it?" Tewari told ANI.

"It would be far more appropriate that rather than standing on some false prestige, they should withdraw the notices," he added.

The three channels have been accused of casting aspersions on the integrity of the President and judiciary, inciting violence and stoking anti-national sentiment.

The Editors Guild of India has also condemned the Information and Broadcasting Ministry's decision.
