Sunderland A.F.C. football team manager Gus Poyet has branded his side's 8-0 thrashing by Southampton as his most embarrassing moment in football.

Sunderland suffered their heaviest Premier League loss in the game at St. Mary's and their biggest defeat in 32 years. Poyet said that it is the most embarrassing time he has had on a football pitch, adding that he cannot watch it again.

Poyet said that he learned a lot about the players, the bad side as some gave up and he added that he knows who they are for the future, The BBC reported.

Poyet said that he may encourage his players to watch a recording of the game again, and expects a reaction from them in their next game against Arsenal on 25 October. He added that maybe the players would watch it and it would be good therapy for them to watch themselves.

The Uruguayan also said that it is going to be a difficult week, and added that the players who are on the pitch next week are going to do something about it. He also said that he feels very sorry for the fans as they came a long way to see a very difficult game.

Sunderland scored two own goals in the defeat, including a spectacular volley from Sunderland's Santiago Vergini, whose attempted clearance flew past keeper Vito Mannone.

The points were all but sealed at half-time thanks to the own goal and two close-range efforts from Graziano Pelle and Jack Cork. But the hosts added five more goals in the second half to complete the rout for Southampton.

Despite the 8-0 win, Southampton boss Ronald Koeman felt his side have room for improvement. He said that 8-0 is not a normal result, adding that he was surprised after 20 minutes about the score, as they were 2-0 up and didn't start the game well.
